To expand on what Mav said, if you are enquiring about cars which are IN STOCK or already in the country, then don't expect any or much discount - for the reasons Mav stated. However, if you are purchasing an R which will be a factory order, then there are definitely discounts to be had. You just have to shop around. It may require going to the Gold Coast, or even to an NSW or ACT dealer if those Brisbane dealers are being difficult.

I will however say, do not expect double digit % discounts like is available on the Golf GTI (i.e. You're unlikely to get 10%+ discounts). The Golf R is very aggressively priced, and more than likely does not have the margin the GTI does.

Yeh, I was a bit put off. I am basically wanting to buy now (I think - need to drive one), and rang two dealers and said "I want Golf R, you have what I want in stock (colour is not a major issue for me), I am ready to buy now, no trade, no finance - can you do better than full RRP because you are not my closest dealer so if you aren't going to do any better than the guy down the road then we won't waste each others time". The response was "just buy from the local guy - we are not giving anything off". I actually didn't expect much, but nothing was a bit of a shock to be honest.

I currently drive a 2008 Audi TT that I will be selling privately, so I don't want the GTi as it is essentially the same drivetrain (albeit 155kw now). Hence the R - all wheel drive and more power plus 4 doors (and a trip to APR after 2-3,000 klms are done!).

    Cheers

    Dan

    • try a country or regional based dealer places like Geelong in Vic or Wollongong / Central Coast in NSW etc,. or try a car consultant. or wait until the end of the month when they will be keen to move cars that haven't sold. I'm a tightass I'd rather wait than pay full price hehehe. Are there many on carsales yet?

        • R is for Retail (for the short term at least) Sales and Marketing 101

Dealers can't get enough. Local dealer here R arrived Thursday, PD on Friday. Buyer came in for an R36 wagon Friday afternoon. Saw the blue R. Change of mind. Full RRP and drove away Tuesday (Monday was a public holiday). I wouldn't expect much in the way of deals on stock cars. Although if you tell them you will send Maverick after them you may be able to screw the dealer for $1 off..... unless it's Austral of course.
You know you are getting old when you cancel your order for a 3.6 CC and buy an Icelandic Gray TDI CC instead.

This is true also, I believe my dealer only got 4 cars in the first batch. They'll sell easy and you have to remember a lot of people don't use forums or even think to discount on a new car, so I wouldn't be surprised if even the demo car sold at RRP or close to it.

            • And yet we've had dealers posting on this forum already hinting that discounts on the R are possible.

I was told of someone who optioned up a 118TSI to over $50k and didn't even want a discount even when it was offered. Some people believe that the price is the price. Then there are other's who'll try to get a discount on a 5c pencil.

Of course discounts on orders, we're talking about current stock ready for delivery!

Yeh thats what I was getting it. I find it astounding but thats life. I worked with a bloke who bought new holdens every couple years. Not only was he paying full RRP, he was also doing his balls on every trade in with their atrocious trade in values. Guess some people have more money than sense.

It comes down to the price you're comfortable paying, for me it was knowing that the price is near to my expectations and that I'm being looked after in the process. Some people, like the discount pencil shoppers don't care what they're buying as long as they've managed to screw down a better a price!

You'll probably find the stock vehicles won't be discounted much if any!

LOL at the mate buying Holdens, I know someone like that too!

When would one expect an order to be here - November? I have a perfectly good car now, so I can wait if I have to.

                          Cheers

On the weekend I was informed late November is the estimate at this stage, although the longer people wait and the more orders that come in, that'll slip back....

I definitely recommend anyone who is serious about purchasing a Golf R to give PhillipVWDealer a call or a Private Message. His quotes are very competitive.

                            • On what grounds does a car that is ordered have more room for discount than a car already in stock?

If anything I would have thought it was the other way around, haha. That is, if a car is already sitting on a dealer's forecourt they definitely won't want it to be there in 4 months or so when a newly ordered car with a committed buyer finally arrives.

Okay, for the first few weeks or so perhaps dealers will want to hang on to their show stock in a situation like this so they can handle demo drives, but I know if I didn't buy an S3 last year I'd be at the local dealers working out what's what in regards to current stock. If you don't ask, you don't get.

Based on anecdotal evidence discounts on RRP are available for the R, they may not be massive but they seem to be available.

I understand Lima where your coming from and have offered discounts on cars in stock including the two sold today in corp + pricing. The problem us dealers have well at least me is I don't have many left.. I don't think these cars will stay around for 4months although I have to keep my personnal demo for at least that long cause I won't be able to get my hands on one. I have already had customers coming with discounted prices from other dealers. Anyway three left cheers.
