Well... that's the "official answer", although as we all know, the Audi TT-S has the same engine etc, and it has the full 200kw. So it's more like Audi left the S3 at 188kw here to give more meaning to the far more expensive TT-S, and now VW can't release the R at 200kw as Audi left the S3 at 188kw

Im looking at golf R 5dr DSG, 19's, leather, ACC, sunroof, MDI, Dynaudio, bluetooth
So spec for spec how much more would an Audi S3 dsg Sportsback be compared to the 5 door Golf R with the above options ?

Basically 6 months out of uni I just scored a new job so im very tempted, thinking of rewarding my self a little .. So would it be worth salary sacrificing on a gross 65k salary ?
Wow, you sound like me. I am an old codger now (probably at least twice your age) but couldn't wait to finish uni and buy a flash car. I bought an immaculate 3 year old Beemer, yep one years salary.

So, though this may sound hypocritical, and this may seem like a left field post but I think that you should perhaps think carefully before leaping into buying such a premium car so soon. Why?

      1. Your new work colleagues will not likely not appreciate it. Yea, call it the tall poppy syndrome, but a flash car when you are just starting out a new career could seriously affect your career growth. I observed that the guys that got the best start to their careers drove the crappiest cars. Jealousy among my work colleagues was rife and they did their best to sabotage my first job. I found that when I ditched the Beemer and took the train, my career started to develop. Having said all of that, I am self employed now

      2. The S3 and Golf R are both seriously good, fast cars. If you buy such a good car now, what will you have to get next? A Ferrari? A Porsche? Unless your career really takes off (and unless you manage to become an exotic financial markets guru), or your mum and dad help, you will be disappointed.

      3. Even if you come from a seriously wealthy family, nothing impresses people more than investing your first dollars earnt into income producing assets. If your family is less than seriously wealthy, it makes even more common sense. Don't take on debt to buy a depreciating asset, save and invest. The magic of compounding investment will work in your favour given your early age (Google it if you don't know what I am talking about). You will have plenty of time to buy a nice car later on.

So, hold back a little, at least put your plans on hold for another year as you see how your career develops. A low mileage, late model, nice $20K Golf would make a great car for you. But only if you can pay cash for it yourself now.

Just my 2 cents, with the benefit of experience

PS: Adaptive cruise, heated seats.... pffft, they are for old codgers like me lol!

I would do some math first (you may have already, my apologies if so). How much are you going to salary sacrifice? Most employers will only let you sacrifice a certain limit.

Then again, I know nothing of your financial position. But I've been down this road before. Ended up getting an Acura RSX Type S (you guys call it the Honda Integra I think?) straight outta uni in my first job making $40k a year. Company went bankrupt after 1.5 years, and I was stuck making lease payments that I couldn't afford anymore. Lease company let me get in to another cheaper car thankfully, but I just finished paying off that whole mess about a year ago.

Just a word of caution. No sense working your butt off just for a car!!! Wait until you can afford it. You'll get there one day =)

        • Yeah thanks guys.. What your all saying makes sense, just got a little excited and was on a high. But i guess its better to invest into an apartment. I think i'll buy a 2007-2008 mkv GTI in cash, for hopefully under $28k. Quick question.. If the car is still officially under factory warranty can I extend it through VW as a second owner? Can bi-xenons be custom fitted and how much?

          Thanks for your help,

Re: 2nd hand MKV Golf GTI could be had for half the price of the MK6 Golf R.
Try using these guys for @ $300 to inspect the vehicle - they spent 2.5 hours going over my old MKV GTI as a condition of my private sale:

State Roads.com.au PRE PURCHASE MOTOR CAR VEHICLE INSPECTION SERVICE Sydney Melbourne Brisbane.

Well worth the spend to save on getting a dud vehicle.

Investing in an apartment makes much more sense! It's only going to get harder and harder to get real estate in Sydney, to getting in as early as possible is a good move!
I had a 2008 MKV Golf GTI, and it was awesome.
Yes, if a car is still under factory warranty, you can extend that whilst it's still under warranty. When you find a car that you are considering purchasing, grab its details (rego and VIN) and give VW a call to find out whether it is still under warranty, and whether it's eligible for the extended warranty (has been serviced to all requirements etc) and what the cost would be.

It is difficult and expensive to retro-fit bi-xenons because of the self leveling and headlight washing systems which are required by law with them. It's best to either get a car with them, or wait for a later car purchase to jump onto that bandwagon

There wasn't a single one who didn't lie to me in order to try to get a sale, most were rude and unprofessional. All in all it was a terrible experience and I'm hoping the car makes it all worthwhile in the end.

WOW thats pretty good coin for a graduate! you might be on a different path to everyone else mate. Cause even my little sis got a grad accounting job at a descent firm and shes on 40K. So who knows what you'll be on in 3 years.

My dad has always thought like the above comments, and I agree with them. I just was never that sensible. Almost. I always worked, and saved and didnt spend much on other crap.. I just spent all my money on my car. You might have expensive social habit (going out alot, different girlfriend all the time etc). I was a pretty steady guy who didnt buy fashion clothes etc for the sake of cars!!

In saying that, I remember used to work at a bank, and Id rock up in my new WRX MY03 and the oldies would be like HTF did you afford that.. didnt help. But I got promoted and out of there anyway. Just dont be a toss about it and you'll be fine. Again some people will just hate on whatever you do..

Yeah, it's not about being a poser, but as someone mentioned the 18" wheels look too small on this car (in that style of wheel at least), just like 17" look too small on the MK6 GTI.

Is anyone getting 19" without ACC? Interested to know how bad the scrubbing is too (if any). I had 18" ET45 on the R32 with a 30mm drop and scrubbing wasn't really an issue beside the odd high speed mid-corner crest/dip. If they've removed the fender screw it saves you the trouble.

The ACC is great in the GTI with 18" wheels, some people seem to say it's not as necessary on the R.. The roads are generally pretty good in BNE and good to do a slight drop in ride height but may not bother.

Also was thinking that the Motorsport seats may be a bit tricky to get into the back of a 3dr, can anyone confirm how they operate - tilt forward only (not slide forward)? They look great but its money you wouldnt get back like a lot of options i guess. Would consider them in a 5dr but the normal seats look fairly good in the photos.

Then you guys need to do some research first.
I would personally recommend Mathew Gazzard at Denlo at Parramatta
                      mathew.gazzard@inchcape.com.au (02) 9828 9716

Several other forum members here would also recommend Russell and Tony from Denlo. All three have received much praise over in the Recommended VW salesman in Sydney thread after helping us all with our Golf R purchases this month.

Any one wanting a Discount, dont bother dealing with Mathew from Denlo @ parramatta.

They are offering NIL discounts on the Golf R.

                          • Hmm, I wonder if that Matthew Gazzard is the same bloke that was a year below me at school back in South Australia. If anyone meets him just say these words and see what his response is ... "I hear you like to be a 'jump ahead of the rest'!"

IMO if a car is worth more than your yearly after tax income....you can't afford it. Investing some money and travelling would be a better idea before a new car. You'll get the tall poppy thing regardless, I get it from the old people at work all the time but a quick reminder that their wives and kids spend all their money shut them up fairly quickly.

If anyone in Melbourne spots a dealer with a car fitted with the race buckets please let me know. I'm not having much luck getting dealers to return calls let alone finding one. Happy to meet up with someone whose taken delivery and check them out if that is possible but I'd prefer to drive one so need to find a dealer with a demo available.

                              • Hey G-rig They tilt forward but you need to slide the car forward manually using the handle to slide the seat forward when sitting in the seat. Hope that helps.. Cool Seats but If your a big person like me (wide frame footballer) it does not feel to comfy.. cloth seats and leather are perfect if you are any size.. My car has the cloth seats but does not get the seat heaters the Motorsports and the leather gets.. Having met you G-Rig you would be comfy in the motorsports.. to many choices ..lol
