Not necessarily wanted to be the 1st .... Sold my GTI about a year ago (got a really good price) in preparation for the R .... and have been driving a RAV4 (my wifes old 1, which we replaced with a Tiguan) until such time as the R became available.

Can't face another 6+months driving the RAV, so need to do something .... NOW ....

To give you an idea of deals, we are honouring Drive Away on all factory orders beyond June 30th. Including GTI & Tiguan.

I won't do Drive Away on R, but I will NEGOTIATE a deal with anyone that wants one. I can also ship interstate if you want to pay your own onroads!

I say again, we are here to sell cars, not charge full retail because people think the car is something special. Metal is metal

Are there any that are close to your spec that you'd be prepared to overlook a few of the options? Just an idea unless there aren't many unallocated ones.

You must have alot more patience than me if you are prepared to wait up to 9 months to get a discount.
Not only securing a better deal, which can be several thousands, but also letting others find out the bugs and letting VW sort them out.
This applies to all new models of items - e.g. cameras - there will bugs which the manufacturer (hopefully) will bring out firmware updates to fix or recall to change parts.

Mate I think that you will find that the R has been out in europe for a little while now, and most of the systems have been used for some time. Even the engine has been out for 3+ years in the s3.

            • So it does come down to discount and availability.
I respect your opinion in waiting for a discount, but personally I am happy to be out of pocket a little more and have my car next week rather than have to wait.

The value of a few thousand now or a few thousand in 9 months...? With 9 months more enjoyment of the car and immediate gratification, it is an easy call for me... but like I said, I don't have your patience!

I still agree with triode12... IMO
Cars come with many many electronic and mechanic items. Every item could be faulty under different circumstances. Weather could be a big issue to the Aussie and Euro market. i will at least wait till end of this year or early next year.
Of cause, I'd like to see more people go to be the 1st. So they will have more to share.

All my opinion...pls dont shoot... lol

                • VW aren't going to start pumping out lemons, the motor is years old and all the other areas are quite developed based on previous cars..

                  • Curious, has anyone gotten any insurance quotes for the R yet?

What bugs? The car is built on the Mark V platform which has been around since 2004 and proven itself to be reliable. And given the long delays with 6-8 weeks on a ship it's unlikely that any faults that appear in the R would be fixed on cars arriving here in six months time even if engineers in Germany started seeing failures over the next few weeks.

                        • Golf R Price Calculator

                          Hi Guys,

I decided to do a massive update to my "Car Pricing Calculator Spreadsheet" which I've maintained for my own purposes, increasing it's functions so that it can be used to simultaneously show you the exact RRP for your configuration and "onroads" as well as show you what the discount you've been able to negotiate equates to once all the onroads are accounted for.

I've also updated it when a "State Selector Drop-Down Box" which adjusts the spreadsheet for all 8 States and Territories. It automatically switches to the correct stamp duty calculation and then provides either the direct costs for Rego/CTP Insurance (or your State's equiv)/Plate, or the links to calculate these.

On a "completely unoptioned Golf R", the resulting figures of this spreadsheet match the Volkswagen website pricing to within $100 (as prices can vary on post code and age and the exact dealer delivery average, it's impossible to get it 100% accurate as the site doesn't break down the costs they use for calculation). But to give you an idea of how accurate this is, QLD is only 1c out as pricing in QLD is the same no matter the post code or driver.

Compared to actual dealer quotes (mine, and the few which have been scanned onto these forums), it's 100% accurate - although I must put in the disclaimer that some of the states have "interesting" stamp duty and rego/insurance/plate conditions (WA & SA & NT) and I can't find any info on the internet which shows the price of standard plates in ACT.

So if anyone notices any errors etc, feel free to PM me and I'll make the appropriate changes.

                          • Awesome work Corey..

Doesn't take many options before the price is ridiculous. Would be good to wait till you can get 12% off.

                            • Thanks Corey; the NT one is quite close. Your calculator comes out at $62,108.51 for my options, and I got it for just over $61k

btw, is the golf R worth the extra $10k i'd have to fork out for the R specs i want?
After reading a few neg comments about tthe blue, I was pleasantly surprised by it. Still the best pick of the colours for the R IMO.

I took the Mk1 for a run to do some R spotting at Slaven Volkswagen and found 1 x Reflex Silver in the showroom (couldn't see if it was 3dr or 5dr). Out the back I also found 2 x Candy White 5drs and 1 x black 3dr.

I really like the Talladega style alloys, a lot, but unlike the 18" Detroits from the GTI which look bigger than 18" the Talladegas have a thick outer rim so the 18" wheels look smaller than they are. If I was buying I'd tick the 19" option I reckon.

Good to see at least one 3dr in the wild, too. Lucky it's not blue, haha.
