I tend to struggle with the whole wheeling and dealing thing... I work in Sales (not in cars) and some customers will price match you to every other vendor/option. It certainly doesn't lend well to future relationships with your dealer. Although people would like to think buying cars are commodity transaction like dropping into Coles to pick up some bread, in actual fact you've just created a 3-4 year relationship with your dealer and VW. You're effectivley now in the system...
Sure, people like bargain and get a good deal and there's fat in the list/RRP prices to play with discounts... whatever the end result is, they're still making a healthy enough margin...
I would rather pay that little bit extra and have a good healthy relationship with my dealer, than screw them for every cent and have a flag against my name on their system - when it comes to servicing and warranty I'm sure they'll try and find some way to claw some margin back...
At the end of the day, we all pay to play - whether we do it up front or in the long term is the choice...

Yeah, I wish the Sunroof was an option on the Pirelli!
I think the biggest thing that helps the resale is the fact that I was the previous ownerGenuine VW Parts Importer | Navigation | Bluetooth |sigpicRepairs | Lighting | Coding | Programming |Cameras

In theory you should also get the same level of service at any dealer around the country, as people often move addresses etc. I don't always use the dealer anyway and go to an independent who I trust and is more competitive and also takes more care. Good to know the person working on the car.

When I bought my Jetta 3 years ago,I was also going to buy from Glen Waverley, but had issues with the salesperson there, who is now at Bayside.
Let the manager know I would NEVER buy a car from them, and was not too concerned...
I also bought from South Yarra, but deal with Camberwell for servicing, etc.
SY said that the wait will be 4 weeks, and the wait was 4 weeks.
I dealt with Michael Cardwell who is now the manager there...

I would never suggest for a second they would call people 'pricks'. However, we're dealing with people and not computerized systems...
At the end of the day, if you or I have the capacity to call a Sales rep or a Service rep a 'prick' then they could easily call a customer that too...VW Passat 3.6 V6

So its only a matter of time until that becomes a standard feature of cars sold here in Oz so the dealerships can have you go back there for servicing and hopefully in years to come get repeat business to keep you loyal to the brand.
All dealerships these days have someone call you after your car has being serviced to see if you are happy with the job done, if not you need to tell then the issues and hopefully have it fixed as part of the service.
I think its a good ideal knowing for say 3 years it wont cost you a cent of regular servicing except for additional items like tyres and things that are not part of the checks. Thats a way to control the cost of saying it cost a arm and a leg to have your car serviced by dealer
That way they can keep you loyal and want you back at the next service.Last edited by SpeedBird; 17-01-2010, 03:28 PM.To most people, the sky is the limit. To those who love aviation, the sky is home.

When you buy an STi in Victoria, you buy from Docklands and officially Docklands are the only place that service them. They control the purchase price of the cars, servicing, warranty etc. Other cars in the lineup can be serviced by any dealers, although I believe most of the dealerships in the metro-melbourne and surrounding suburbs are operated by a single managing entity trading as Subaru. As a result, there's very little price reductions, other than the "making the customer feel-good discounts" which is easily catered for by buffered list prices.
Service is good, but priced at the dealership prices you'd expect and comparable to other brands, and as pointed out the servicing costs are predictable which is a good thing.
I think most brands will go this way. It seems anti-competitive in a way, but with so many brands, makes and models to choose from most manufacturers need to be competitive to stay profitable, by controlling pricing like this I guess it gives them an edge.VW Passat 3.6 V6
