I wonder if VW have corrected the problem? What date was your car delivered, Neil?

Mine is a MY08 GTI delivered 28/9 (early June build, from memory).

If there's an updated, more accurate speedo we should push for a warranty replacement with the new units.

I went through one of those road work radars on the F3 and I was doing 84 on the speedo and it showed 79 on the radar...

Consistent enough to the other examples.

I have the Jetta which I believe is built in Mexico and Golfs are S.A ?? , and
2 door GTI's germany.
So whether this has something to do with it i don't know.
Again can someone confirm the difference with the Climate control setting.
I had to set the fan temperature different to what was first suggested.
(see above post) I can have MPH and KPH on my display.
maybe this is another difference between the different built models from
different countries.

It will be the weekend before I can do that. My car is a Nov 06 build and classed as a MY07.

Indicated 60 is really 56
Indicated 100 is really 93
Indicated 107 is really 100.

Half that error would be reasonable, so I'm not all that happy.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the inputs to the instrument cluster.
I want to work out if this would be suitable and what the signal from the ECU to the cluster is.

they used to get it done on the old VS commies but do they still get it done on the new ones? i guess they could have a standalone device somewhere in there among all that electronic crap.

The way I tested mine was to reset the trip meter and check the average speed on cruise on the freeway and I found mine was showing 106km/h average at an indicated 120km/h over 1km on a dead flat road. Its gonna save you from speed fines is VW's "explanation".

By this it would appear the ADR only specifies a maximum plus figure, and car makers are always conservative so they can't be accused of under-reading.

I havent gone any further with it yet as i wont get my GT Sport until March 08.
I do however know that the speed input into the instrument cluster is a single wire as is required for the kit i posted the link and i know which wire it is.

The only other thing i need to know (i think) is whether the signal is a pulse type signal from the gear box as most cars are or whether its a data signal from the ECU from the ABS wheel sensors.

If anyone knows this then please let me know.
Cant wait until i get my car to see how accurate the speedo is and then build a speed correction kit if i need to.

My brother has had his civic's speedo re-calibrated in the past.
He got larger wheels that threw it out so he took to a place in Penrith that took care of it.

Don't know if complex electronics in the VW allow for it though.

Now that I think about it, IIRC the Police Falcons had an option where turning the trip meter reset knob left/right would change the speedo reading making it easy for the "calibration" to be done. The father in law has an AUII XR8 and tried this out and it doesn't work in his car (retail purchase) so maybe it's a "police pack" option, although I didn't think there was a police pack these days...

I was going to say "why not include that in all cars if it's such a simple option" but then I thought about it some more. Consider that the average user is a ... whats the PC word these days??... fool. Someone would knock the button unintentionally changing the speedo then sue the living hell out of Ford when something bad happens.

You would think that the dealer diagnostic/computer hookup would have the option to change the setting, especially when different wheels are a factory option for many vehicles. Who knows.

I like the idea of changing the printed dial.

I would buy an Australian dial, that has the correct speed (-3%) and highlights our more common limits, such as 40, 60, and 100, instead of the 50 and 70.

gee. never would have thought the speedo issue could raise such a response. i have been aware of this for a few years with our nbc thanks to newbeetle.org
i personally dont pay that much attention to it as i know it is out by approx 8 km/h at 100. so i just compensate for that error when up at freeway speeds. it also helps me with the knowledge of not getting speeding tickets if i use the speedo.
i approached a speedo place in melb years ago about a potential quick fix. they told me no such thing available, would be a custom job with lots of time and $$$$ so i never bothered.

I read somewhere that VagCom (and the dealer equivalent) could adjust your speedo and your fuel consumption figures by up to 15%. Haven't tried it though, so can't say for sure.
