Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I've been doing a trip metre to work, and its the right distance to my previous car and GPS! So I don't think that is an issue?

well since the climate control knows roughly the real speed, as does the speed limit function in the computer (when you press ok going a certain speed, it sets it to your current speed, different to what the speedo says) i would guess that the odo goes off them. theres probably much stricter rules for the odo than the speedo iw ould think... but then again this is australia

You'd think that, but, in a proof that this speedo error is intentional, the odo reads corrrectly.

As an aside, I think there was a successful class action case against one of the car makers in the US (Honda or Toyota?) where cars were being released with known inaccurate odometers.

Please refer to attached for the ADR in regards to instrumentation. My dealer has referred me to this in the past and explained that the +-10% is now outdated and when working the prescirbed formula the speed can be out by up to 16%?

Great. I'll use my Toyota Hilux truck to calibrate the R32 speedo. So, what speed to I have to indicate to be doing the 100 km/h speed limit? Or the 70 km/h one? Quickly now....

Bloody useless VW. You may as well leave the speedo out if it is going to lie to us.

Anyway so this is a problem that can be fixed by taking the car back to the dealership?
It can't be fixed by the dealer.
People have tried fixing it with vag-com, but I haven't seen any report that was succesful.

                Well,
I am not alone at last....
I have had same experience but I thought all others were speeding, especially in 70Km/h zone... until reading this thread.
It never occurred to me that speedo can be out by that much.

Did the funky climate control conversion tonight and sure enough - my MY08 GTI's speedo is ~10% out.

However, the speedo dial must be innacurately marked or calibrated, as it's not a flat 10% difference across all speeds - the % varies.

Christ almighty, could VW make it any harder if they tried to accurately determine what speed I'm doing?

I think I'll just use the CC speedo for a while until I can subconciously make the necessary adjustment using the main speedo. It shouldn't be this hard....

These dodgy speedos really should be recalled and replaced by VW, in my opinion.

Now that makes me wanna use foul language
I spend $35000 f....n dollars, they are happy to take it but we will not tell you about this and this, oops forgot about this

                        What does VW Australia think?
We can all guess our speed and stick to speed limit if no other cars around to compare to?

                          Which doesn't make it acceptable.

I suppose that if all of the engines blow up at 20,000 km then that would be ok....as long as they all do it.

                            Mass Protest

Perhaps this calls for some sort of group response to VW?

That is good idea but who would instigate it and where would you send it to and to whom?
VW answer that it can not be fixed is a lot of bull..... I think it is the cost associated with a amss scale repair .
If done for one person, a word would quickly spread around, hence you'd get a domino effect

It has to just be software. And I'm sure it's already sitting on a hard drive somewhere.

But it annoys me enough that the Touareg (if it has the same feature) that I was thinking of as a Hilux replacement, might become an X5 - unless those arseholes at BMW can't make a decent speedo either...in which case I'll stick with the Japs.
