    This is very dissapointing.
I'm about to order a GT Golf TDI DSG and to know that the speedo is out by this much will be one of those things that will bug me forever,

Surely it is software only so i hope with enough pressure they fix it. Either that or the manufacturer of VAG-COM makes their latest version able to correct it.

    There must be a way.!!!

Get bigger wheels. 20" should do the trick!

if you get the gt sport it has dual zone climate control standard, which means you can use the climate control display as an ACCURATE speedo (its actually very accurate, tested it yesterday). but please, dont let it put you off this great car, it will be your loss only

This thread has generated a lot of heat and I'd just like to say that I think you'll find speedo inconsistencies across the range of all new vehicles today (I can't think of one off-hand that is entirely accurate) and the many very good points of why we buy and love our VWs seems to have become lost in the mix.

Personally ... I don't drive 'to the speedo' all the time ... I drive to the traffic conditions around me (including setting cruise control) and I think if you are constantly refering to your speedo ... your eyes are not on the road.

          My .02c worth.

Dave, I take it you don't live in Victoria.....

Driving to your speedo is bad technique, but given that there's a radar every 3 feet along our roads, you have to if you feel like keeping your licence.

I dont know if anyone has done this but maybe an email to VAG-COM is worth it just to see their view on it and whether or not it could be included in their software.
I will send one now and post the response.

I was going to fit 225x45s (rather than 225x40) to my 18" rims when I got them, but the tyre dudes wouldn't do it because it was too far off from the standard rolling diameter. The only reason I was going to do that was to reduce the speedo error.

I can live with the error, as I always sit 10 above, but with the inbuilt correction it's only 5 above - so less likely to get busted.
But I will probably go with 235x40 at the next change, which will drop the error to about 2 or 3 km/hr.
If you are out by 8km/hr though there isn't much you can do unless you can get VW to supply a software fix.

apparently MY08 cars have more accruate speedo.

not sure if it's true but i saw posts on some VW forum.

maybe you can take a sat-nav to the test drive to rarify.

I wouldn't have bought if I'd known about it....

It annoys me that much. I've already relegated the 32 to the boss and gone back to my previous vehicle. Sad, but I really can't stand this sort of behaviour.

I have just sent this email to VW Australia.
Lets see what sort of response i get.
                              _____________________________________________

                              VW,

Firstly, I tried using the online form on your website to send this message and it just didn’t work.

There appears to be a problem with the accuracy of the speedo in the Golfs.
Where most manufacturers speedo will read 3-4km/h higher that the actual speed it would appear the VW's error is alot highter, as in 10%.
This means to be travelling at 100 the speedo has to say 110.

Please read all the posts here to see the extent of the problem.

It is a serious and annoying problem for some and it is even starting to prevent people from purchasing just because of this, including me.
Can a software fix be made available through the dealers.

I understand the legal implications and the fact that some sort of margin needs to be factored into the calibration however a 10% margin is just too great, 3-4km/h is all thats required.
I ask that this be seriously looked into and a fix provided. It is a bigger problem than you may think.

I just sent this one to VAG-COM, Ross-tech.

                                _______________________________________________

                                Dear Vag-Com support,

A lot of customers and potential VW golf (rabbit) customers here in Australia are complaining about the accuracy of the speedometer in the vehicles.

It would appear that they are up to 10% out of calibration meaning that in order to be traveling at 100km/h the speedometer needs to be indication 110hm/h

A lot of people are looking for a fix to this problem including me. I am sure it is something that could be corrected through software but so far no one has had any luck in dealing with VE directly.

The car does actually know the correct speed that you are traveling because if you compare the speed on a GPS unit the speed that one can display in the dual zone climate control window then they are identical and correct. The problem only lies with what the actual speedometer is displaying.

Is correcting the speedometer calibration something that could be included as one of the many functions of your software package. ?
I would assume this problem extends to other model cars in the VW range.
