Vr6 timing chains last around 150k - 200k, you get the odd few that last longer, or ones that don't last as long.Originally posted by Speed View PostWell that's a bugger!
The care u take on start up, servicing, and how u drive it, are the main determining factors.
The care u take on start up is the most important one.Garage:

My source says:
Note this Haynes Service and Repair Manual does not cover 2.8 VR6 or four-wheel-drive models, so you will probably need to confirm that your auto transmission is a Type 096/Type 01M or a different unit.Originally posted by Haynes Service and Repair ManualAuto Transmission:

Read that type 01M was from 96 onwards and also don't have a dipstick.Mk IV Golf GTI - BMP - GIAC chip, R32 wheels, KW coilovers, rear swaybar.

Yours is a 1995 model, right?Originally posted by stefcio007 View PostPretty sure I have a 01M, IIRC.
Do you have a dipstick for the gearbox???
I've read that the 01M is a computer controlled 4 speed. If you do have one, I'd be checking if you could change to sports mode with VCDS.
Sadly , I can't do it with the VR6 I'm fixing up but probably for the best.Mk IV Golf GTI - BMP - GIAC chip, R32 wheels, KW coilovers, rear swaybar.

No problems, any time. I will not pretend to be a mechanic but I do love my Mk3s. Unfortunately, my wife would kill me if I went and bought another Mk3 so I will just have to live my VR6 fantasies through you guys instead
