If the oil is changed quite regularly and when it should from new, it can prolong this a fair bit. I've worked for Mazda and BMW and they both have a couple of engines where this can be quite common, more so if servicing is neglected

Thankyou for clarifying. Is the 12v VR6 an interference type engine?

Vr6 timing chains last around 150k - 200k, you get the odd few that last longer, or ones that don't last as long.

The care u take on start up, servicing, and how u drive it, are the main determining factors.
The care u take on start up is the most important one.

                  • I thought we could use dex 3 but I'd have to check.

Note this Haynes Service and Repair Manual does not cover 2.8 VR6 or four-wheel-drive models, so you will probably need to confirm that your auto transmission is a Type 096/Type 01M or a different unit.

                      • Read that type 01M was from 96 onwards and also don't have a dipstick.

                        • Pretty sure I have a 01M, IIRC.

Yours is a 1995 model, right?
Do you have a dipstick for the gearbox???

I've read that the 01M is a computer controlled 4 speed. If you do have one, I'd be checking if you could change to sports mode with VCDS.

Sadly , I can't do it with the VR6 I'm fixing up but probably for the best.

                              • No problems, any time. I will not pretend to be a mechanic but I do love my Mk3s. Unfortunately, my wife would kill me if I went and bought another Mk3 so I will just have to live my VR6 fantasies through you guys instead
