I hear you loud and clear. I'll be selling 3 cars this year so I can go all out on VAG.
The more I look at a VR engine, the more I want to put one in something else

Do you have a dipstick for the gearbox???

I've read that the 01M is a computer controlled 4 speed. If you do have one, I'd be checking if you could change to sports mode with VCDS.

Sadly , I can't do it with the VR6 I'm fixing up but probably for the best.
Just saw this. No dipstick. I have '95. Part number is 01M 398 009 for the Meyle filter kit. Currently ~$50 delivered from eBay. I think they are a good brand. Not sure if that one is made in Germany though. At that price, maybe not. VW OEM costs 3x more.
Do you think the Meyle kit for $30 is ok? I mean with filters there shouldn't be much of a difference and the part doesn't undergo high strain. I've heard stories of some high strain Meyle parts failing because they were made in China.

This kit plus Penrite ATF fluid from SCA, makes it about a $100 job. Looks just a bit more complicated than an oil change.
I would assume they just put the VR6 in sports mode all the time

      • My 2c is that the $30 filter will be fine. Is a new gasket included in the $100?

Since we don't have a button, the sports mode will be full time.. which is what you want

I'm curious to know how it performs once done

          • I've ordered the kit, yes it includes the gasket. I'll let you know how it goes.

              • The auto transmission shop that my VW specialist mechanic has recommended to me has quoted me $260 to service the Vento.

I helped my dad do the auto transmission service on a Toyota when I was a young impressionable teenager and after he did that he swore never to do it himself again. Currently, I do not have a garage, a hoist or a jack so I am thinking that it is probably save me that much in bitchin' and cursing if I try to do it myself.

                • Yeah I'd pay 260 just to save me time right now. Too many cars!

                  • I literally got under the car without jacking it at all and removed the cover plate. I'm skinny af. Will put it on jack stands though when doing the whole job. That's a pretty good quote.

Good to know. Does the engine sump look easy to remove once the transmission cover plate is removed?

                        • Yeah $260 is a very good quote, my brother's mechanic in Melbourne quoted me $484 to service the auto transmission, so I got him to just top it up for the ferry trip.

I am of reasonably slight build and I have always found working under my Golf CL a challenge, I have just bought a pair of stands which will make working under the Golf and the Vento much more comfortable.

When I did the oil and filter change I just drove up some wooden blocks, maybe 10cm thick or so, was enough to do the job.

                            • Can we have a sticky of parts from the MK4 that are compatible with the MK3?
