Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Enough oil filters to last a life time and just about everything I need to fix up most of the loose ends with the MK2.

    Why all the filters?

I think we should have a wip around and buy you a VW beadspread for christmas

You get a (very small...) discount per filter for bulk buys, and I change them religously every 5,000.

Can't recall when I got that cover, had it for ageeeeeeees haha

PS, Auscare, your DP is heresy.

          • Wow, I'm jealous mate

Did you get the new ignition lock housing because of the failed bearing in your old one? Could you please do a write up when you fix this? I'll be very interested to see how you go.

Good on you mate, keep up the good work!

I not certain if the bearing has actually failed in the old housing.

I attempted to replace the ignition housing, switch and lock the other day, but was unable to because I have the big to small spline adaptor on my steering column (there a press fitted on, you need alot of force to take them off!)

              I just followed this thread 4130 Products - Step-By-Step
but happy to help out if needed.

                • Nothing monumental, but worth a mention.

After getting sick of poor radio reception on the old Kenwood headunit, thought it was time for a new headunit, that suited the car better.

Enter this great little unit from Jaycar, nice simple look and easy to use
Reception problem ended up being multiple faults with the coaxial cord and connections, all fixed now.

                    • I just replaced my ignition lock housing. To get the spline adapter off, I put some vice grips behind the shoulder of the adapter. Then attach some gear pullers onto them and the steering column. It came off quite easily.
Ryan that link u put up is great!!
My bearing was a little sloppy, but the ignition switch was f*#%*$!!! it starts easily now
                      Took less than an hour

Nawww, I must just be unlucky then haha.
I tried a similar method to above (with a bearing puller) but just ended up mangling the shoulder.

My ignition switch is starting to get tempremental.
Gonna try it again soon with a bearing separator.... fingers crossed.

                              Awesome radio!!
I had the same problem, dont directly put the puller onto the shoulder.
Clamp a pair of vice grips onto the adapter (behind the shoulder) use the back of the grips as your surface to pull against, if not try some wd40 too
