Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

DIYing it is the best way to learn about your car, you learn so much and save $$

I haven't removed the rack on the MK2, I only had the steering rack boots replaced by a mechanic. (not a hard job)
Yeah it is lower than standard, the previous owner (Adam from VAGarage) put in a Boge (Turbo?) lowering kit, handles like a go-kart but is a silly stiff ride.

It definantly needs love/care with 300,000km its covered so far!

EDIT: Dom, this may be helpful DIY Manual steering rack replacement
    That's a great write-up there, thanks Ryan!

The stance of your car is perfect - would like to get mine lowered to about that height (actually probably the next thing on my 'to-do' list).

Will be coming back here for some extra motivation - top thread!

    • Would love to lower my car to around the same height, however the potholed roads at the moment would cause some serious back pain!!!
      Still....would love it!!

Just get yourself some lowering springs & fit them with the original shocks. Best of both worlds.

Just keeps getting better Ryan! What's next on the list?

But now I don't have a bouncy speedo needle

The old calble looks like a bit of a bodge job (it did work though)

Broken CV boot and rack boot's are now all replaced too.
Mine got replaced by them and it still bounces!

Haha, I think the cause of my 'back pain' is because of the MK2's suspension and lousy drivers seat.

            Windooooooow scrapers

Mine doesn't bounce now, instead it....... well look at my signature
You can get the actual speedo drive system rebuilt by pro's if it's really bad.

Yeah, I wasn't very impressed either after buying a new OEM speedo cable and instrument cluster.
It bounces around the 20km/h mark but stays dead straight after that.

Mine doesn't tick, it just bounces around at about the 20km/h mark... anyway, I still think nothing beats the 'beauty of old(er) cars'

                        • Bit of a head's up if anyone is interested.

Bought some outter window scrapers (Mexican repo's) from this fellow 2 weeks ago,
                          eBay My World - tonyboy1977

Had 3 pairs (6) scrapers sent to Australia for just on $100, bargain.
They take a little persuading but fit quite nicley

                          Before...(old scraper haha)

                          After (new scraper)
