Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • Did a few small things to the MK2 today, which should have been done loooong ago.

1.Replaced the oil temp sender, mucked around with the wiring and now I can watch the temp on the MFA all day long
Likes to hang around 100C around town.
Also thanks go to SortofbigBJ for getting me the sender (if he ever reads the thread )

      2. Fixed an abnoxious/painful dash squeak by simply tightening a nut in the scuttle tray.

3.Also ordered some Boston 3.5 inch speakers to go in the dash (get rid of the nasty 5inches in my door pods).

Not very interesting so here's a piccy of my recent polishing work to the roof/bonnet.

            Oz is on the money.

You'll need the 10mm Deep drive, with an extension (this is a 1/4 inch socket set job).
Location.....well it took me about 10 minutes to find it, but just go by this diagram.

            4. Interior - 4.1 Instrument Cluster and Instrument Panel

You may need to move the wipers, dislocate fingers, scream, swear ect

Haha thanks, its nowhere near perfect, but much better than what is used to look like.
If you have some spare time and $$, this is the kit I used,

                  • I got the speakers overnight from Sydney! Very impressed by Ryda.com
Only 3.5inch, but very chunky little things,

Pretty much a direct fit into the (empty) dash holes, they're not bass monsters, but the sound from them is really crisp/clear.

Also bought these ceramic H4 plugs as part of a plan to revamp the headlight loom (again), from LARRIKIN PRODUCTS -,
                    Graeme is a top bloke

Also got my green's a few days ago..... dunno what differance a green P does haha.

                    Time to pay insurance now

                    • After some recent pretty slow start ups and boredum, thought I'd make up some new batt/alternator leads.

2 gauge (35mm) wire from Jaycar, various terminals and may aswell throw in a new battery for good measure

I'll install it tommorrow after I recover from last night.

                        • Thanks Jarred, it certainly is a good upgrade/update.

I think the starter motor is more powerful than the 8v now
Alternator output voltage is up too.

                          • Great work, very impressed with the DYI attitude and the success you've had so far. Just out of curiosity, how difficult is it to remove the steering rack on the Mk2? Also is the suspension on your car stock (looks lower than standard)?

This must be one of the most looked after/cared for Mk2 Golf in the country Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the kind words Dom, much appreciated (still jealous that you own a valver haha)

DIYing it is the best way to learn about your car, you learn so much and save $$

I haven't removed the rack on the MK2, I only had the steering rack boots replaced by a mechanic. (not a hard job)
Yeah it is lower than standard, the previous owner (Adam from VAGarage) put in a Boge (Turbo?) lowering kit, handles like a go-kart but is a silly stiff ride.

It definantly needs love/care with 300,000km its covered so far!

EDIT: Dom, this may be helpful DIY Manual steering rack replacement

                              • Spent the last couple days re-updating the headlight loom.

All the connections on my initial relay upgrade (1 relay PER bulb) were all crimped.
This time (after removing the crimps) I crimped, soldered and heatshrinked all connections.

Incase anyone is looking for relay mounting points for for the high's on there MK2, I found this to be quite effective,

Since the connection's were being redone properly I also went out and bought some Philips 100w H3's for the high's.

                                Main Beam (came out blurry?)

                                High Beam (same location)
