Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

To do the heater core PROPERLY you need to take the dash out.

It's scary as but once it's out you realise that you didn't need to be that worried at all! It'll make your balls grow by an inch in diameter...

Hey Ryan, I also need a heater core mine is shagged; looked at Gap, the Mk 2 & 3 cores seem to be one and the same; did you buy the oem or aftermarket one ? If after market what's the quality like?

      Cheers

Benough, what's your estimate on total time for dash out, core replacement and then dash back in? I'm tempted to get it done by a mechanic, I know it will be expensive just don't have the time.....I have a new dash so it's a heater core/dash replacement mission....

        Cheers

          G'day
Yeah I bought the aftermarket one, for $40 it aint to bad quality wise and really at that price its hard to say no.
A couple weeks back I bought an old copper, used Holden heater core for $65 (price didn't bother me at the time).
So $40 for a perfectly fine new heater core is too hard to refuse

                    Famous last words

Haha, the job doesn't intimidate me that much, it just seems like one of those "to do it properly take your time" type of situations.
Im really busy atm with Assignments and work

When I do get a chance to change it though, it wont be cold anymore so Ill have to wait another year to try it out!
And itll be time to get the A/C back on line

No you don't. I just had to take out everything below the dash except the A/C to get to mine.

Was driving along nicly Monday arvo when I heard a sizzling cracking sound coming from the dash.
Suddenly my radio went off then came back on, then I looked at my cluster and my Tacho, Temperature Gauge and Fuel gauge has all dropped out (car was still driving fine).
Indicator light does not work anymore now and neither does my battery warning light.
So went home ripped the dash apart then thought it to be a good idea to check my alternator, so I tested the voltage at the batt terminals whilst car was running and got 12.1 volts.... oh dear and if I remove a battery lead whilst the car is running it stalls.

As the car sits in the garage at the monent with a highly suspect alternator (removed)

                                The culprit!

and can you spot whats missing

Aiming to get the alternator rebuilt in the next week or so (really hope its just the alternator).
Whilst it was out I took advantage of the oppurtunity to replace my squealy old vee belts
