  • The other day i put in 14L of fuel, and got around 120 kms.. but thats me driving VERY slow and changing early.
The carb has already been jetted down, but still is ment to be for a 4.1 Falcon XF

Ill have to ring the guy up as it was rebuilt less than a month ago. Hopefully he can jet it further down..
On my way home today, not even turning, just going dead STRAIGHT the car started jerking back and forth, like a fuel shortage, then after 5-10 seconds went back to normal. This happened 3 times. Im getting quite annoyed

Same, if not better then a stock solex carby.
My old engine and weber got around 9L/100kays under heavy driving, no HWY either.

      • my old 1.6 did around 12's, But it was never set up properly, and ran rich. (over jetted)

George, when was the last time you replaced the fuel filter? You could be getting some crap/debri in the fuel line/ fuel flow, which is causing the jerky ness.

        • I'd be checking all your jets for crap in them dude.

          • ive heard that you can rev the car up to around 3k and slam your hand over the carby with the filter off and the sudden vacuum rush in it can suck all the crap out of it.

Ive seen a mechanic friend do it once or twice, its usually a 50/50 fix, as sometimes it can lodge crap further in the circuits
Also, 80% of your driving will be done on the Idle circuit, so getting that setup spot on is crucial

            • I would be doing what Preen said. Pull the jets out one by one and make sure they arent blocked. Common problem. They need to be the right size too, and the float has to be set up right as well. Theres a fair amount of tweaking with carbs, especially when they are from another vehicle like a 4L Falcon. 32/36 webers are great and match the 1.6-1.8 nicely. I had one on my bored out and ported 1.7 golf mk1 motor. Was plenty enough and ran beautifully.

              • Yes I'd be checking your idle jets first and foremost. My 44IDF used to get crap stuck in the idle jets on it every once in a while.

Easy way to pick which ciruit it is.. If it does it on trailing throttle and idles rough, but when you plant your foot it clears up- It's your idle circuit and more than likely your idle jets.

Whenever it happened to me i'd just pull up straight away, unscrew the idle jets, blow them out and refit them. Usually you'll see a big chunk of **** jammed in the end of one of them...

                • Make sure you've got a good fuel filter fitted. That usually helps keep the carby clean and there's nothing wrong with fitting a 2nd (aftermarket) filter just before the carb.

There's nothing worse than being parked by the side of the road pulling the top off the carby and dropping a vital piece between the radiator and the grill and having to take the radiator out. Then you have to go looking for water to refill the radiator. If the missus is in the car waiting for you to get back on the road you can kiss goodbye to any sex you had planned for the night.

Why doesn't any of this happen with other cars, only MK1 Golf's.

Hahahaha mate, the amount of times i've pushed my car due to a fault of somesort. Its a price to pay with driving these cars, im hapy to pay it. A few problems with the exchange of the huge amounts of ppl i meet, and the amounts of ppl that stop me in the streets to find out more about the car.. wouldnt have it any other way.

However fellas, as i had mentioned NUMEROUS times, the carby had been rebuilt a month or so ago, and the jets had recently been fitted. None the less ill still check the jets, only thing is i dont know how to or where/what they look like. The float too, is a thing im not fimiliar with. Ill take it back to the guy and demand a look over agian. Arrghhhhh carbies -.-

                    • Brass bits are the floats, some models have plastic ones.

Take top cover off to show this

this is the idle jet, should be one on other side too

Never really seen a falcon weber, but im assuming all progressive downdrafts are the same, or similar

Buy yourself a good weber tuning guide, mate. Worth their weight in gold!

                        • Went to a JDM meet lastnight in the city, and on the way back my friends and i had some fun, hitting around 160. I've never put my foot down completely in the little golf, however gotta say it has some balls. I think i read somewhere my engine is 55kws? Hmm goes pretty good.

However i've been having a problem for the past week. When the car starts up it jerks, idles strangely, and if it stalls is very hard to start agian unless push starting it. However after around 15/20 mins, it runs prefectly fine? I've bought a new fule filter, opened the carb checked the jets and everything, and they were perfect. I still havnt tuned it since i got it, but it ran fine. Can anyone suggest where to get it tuned, so i can just have a reliable daily, as this sh*ts getting outta hand ahaha.

Anyway more to the point. Lets just say this pic here inspired me a little.. so i went to supercheap today and got some supplies.

When you're push starting you have full 12v to the coil, when you use the starter motor the voltage to the coil is reduced, Might be time to look at your spark. Start by checking the gap on your spark plugs as this can be the cause of hard starting. I can't remember if MK1's have transistorised ignition or came out with points in the dizzy? Points wear down and need to be adjusted.

Thanks for that Paul, ill check it tmoro first thing, i had a feeling it was my plugs. However, its strange as when the car is warmed up it starts first crank, without any problems. However it has the odd idle drop, and once that idle drops and stalls, ONLY THEN is it very hard to start agian. And the engine jsut keeps cranking and cranking over and over.
Today upon trying ti start it up, i heard it backfire. So i'll definately have a deeper look into it tmoro

Oh as for the fuzzy dice, not really, but it looks pretty cool
