Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

As to be expected, more set backs as I try and get closer to the end of doing a RWC to see if she’ll pass.

Starting pulling the front shocks out to replace and not only was it a struggle, but I messed up a CV boot and my bump stops are screwed.

Got a mate in Sydney sending me new bump stops for all around and I’ll just get the universal CV boot kit and do both and get it done.

I also have new brake pads on their way for the front, which means sometime during the week I’ll be putting the new rotors on and the new pads in and that should be it for the front for now.

Still trying to figure out if I can get the drums in the rear machined and where, but also the shoes getting new liners then that should be all done.

I’m also making a tool for the front inserts screw cap so I can get everything done to the point of just waiting for the bump stops.

Thanks heaps. That’s the plan. Luckily it’s only minor set backs or small things halting me.

So, just want to thank the aholes who worked last on this engine. I hope their fingers turn into fish hooks and that their aholes never stop itching. Took me about 90min or more to get this done alone.

So, I will be able to fit my suspension this weekend and then also get my front brakes done.

I’m trying to push as hard as I can to get the car on the road. But every week there are new bumps. Luckily small, but I’m happy to tinker away at it.

I have a new water pump for when I do the timing as well. Rather safe than sorry. It’ll go nice with the new radiator and expansion tank I have for the car as well.

And my quality control inspector was happy with the new bump stops. So I should be safe installing them. [emoji23]

Fingers crossed. I’m a little tentative with doing the timing belt. I have one of two options:

                1) Do the timing belt myself and run the risk of messing up OR
                2) Do at least the pump timing, see if I can get the car on the road and then have my dad help me do the timing belt. [emoji848]

It was a little busy yesterday with the car. I need to try and do an outer CV boot on the passenger side. As I made a booboo and ripped it.

But I got the other three shocks done and done some more cleaning up on the vehicle as she needs it. The car will sit about 30-40mm lower than standard. Couldn’t do pre-measurements as she was sitting quite low already with the old shocks.

But I’m getting there. Slowly but surely.

It will be cool to see it on the road, you're doing way better than I could.

I have some automotive experience so it helps. The only thing that doesn’t help is I don’t have all the tools I need so I practically get no work done on the car during the week as I borrow tools from my dad’s workshop. [emoji23]

Ah, very good. You have some knowledge, and occasionally the right tools too.

I’m hoping to fix the CV boot and do the brakes tomorrow and have her on the ground by about midday or early afternoon.

But I’m very yes or no on doing the timing belt myself. Spoke to my dad and he recommended that I don’t try my first timing belt change on a Mk1.

But I have found an amazing video on youtube where they show in detail what to do and I have watched it over 20 times now.

Sounds like you reckon you can give it the old college try. Way out of my league for sure. Good luck either way.
