Are you going standard brakes or upgrading to MK1 GTI specs? The GTI ones are a lot better but you need discs, calipers and pads to do the conversion.

Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I’m after a non ABS Mk3 booster and master cylinder and a Mk3 wiper motor. If you know of someone, I’d appreciate that.

Give Nick at Volksspares a call - 0412 345 126. He's out at Bungendore and has lots of MK1 and MK3 Golfs.
The Green Shed at Mitchell has a complete MK3 for $500 if you want to do a complete powertrain conversion.1978 MK1 2.0 16v http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...-46488-70.html

Ok, so after a bit of screwing around tonight with the lights I think I may have found the right combination to upgrade the lights to much better quality.
The LED has low beam, high beam, day time driving lights and indicators in it. But it is a consealed unit which needs to be held in place by a “clamp housing”. The housing I’m busy playing around with comes from a Series 1 & 2 Land Rover.
It’ll need to be modified a smidge and possibly holes drilled to suit the golf original mounting points. But I’ll play around with it a bit more when I have more day light to do so.

If anyone on here has a 7 pin relay for a diesel golf that fits the glow plug relay slot, I’m chasing one as I am now at a dead end trying to see if there is any other issues in that wiring to make the glow plugs work.
I’m soon to get a new fusebox as I believe my has some bad corrosion in it and could be a very big part of my electrical issues.

I finally got the new fuse box yesterday. The only part I need to be able to complete this installation is the Glow Plug Relay(funny enough, everywhere in the world has them but Australia)
So this weekend I’ll be spending time cleaning up the fusebox and wiring under the dash since it looks like a birds nest with random wires just running everywhere to give things power. I’m hoping that I can clean it up and have the rest of the electrical working the way it should.
Will be asking tons of questions on here while doing the last few things and see if she’ll pass for rego. [emoji87]

Been a little quite here, but do have a small update. I finally found someone who had the relay I need to complete the glow plug circuit. It only took about 4 weeks to find someone.
$65 delivered next day at my house which is pretty good. Thanks to Paul at Tooley Imports.
My plans for this weekend is install a new expansion tank, do a coolant flush, finish up modifying the brackets for the LED lights and then give her a much needed wash especially in the engine bay area.
I hope everyone especially those in Victoria are staying safe and keep yourselves healthy.

Thanks to a good mate for helping out where he can, and selling me some parts that I truely need so I can keep pushing to get the car on the road.
Today I received a Cam Splash and a new rocker cover gasket from my mate to help prevent oil into the intake but also replace the head gasket which I’m sure has never been replaced as there are plenty of traces of silicone, which tells me they tried to fix a possible oil leak from the rocker cover by using silicone.
On another note, looks like I might have a new radiator and also a new front engine mount bush by this weekend.
I’ll be a little bit busy this weekend. But can’t wait.

Decided to order a timing belt and tensioner as well. Hoping I might be able to have them by this weekend.
I do have a question though, anyone in or around Canberra that has some experience in doing the timing?
As I need to try and get the belt and tensioner on but also check that my timing is right for engine and fuel pump as I believe I have a fueling issue which is also part of my hard starting.

To anyone who can help me out with this, I’d really appreciate the help. But for some reason I can not seem to find the VIN number on my golf.
I have tried to look everywhere I can to find it. But the only code I can find is one right on top the driver strut tower and there is also a plate on the front apron that has the same number.
If anyone can figure out what these numbers mean or where I can try and find the VIN other than the normal spot against the firewall just below the scuttle tray etc.
