It's not bizarre.
Rcd330 doesn't work with a highline module because they don't know how to talk to each other.
A lowline camera is a simple video output so that works with a converter.
Unless someone comes up with a can converter to allow the rcd to talk to an older rvc control module you have to remove the highline module and connect the video feed straight from the camera itself or install any aftermarket camera.

So the mk6 gti has a high line module hey? I thought it was a lowline. I don't have the moving guide lines, would this indicate this?
Ok if it's lowline then in theory it should work. Does the RCD have an adaptation channel to set the RVC input mode?
If so it should be set to FBAS (composite).
If that doesn't work you'll need to use an aftermarket camera.

I'll have a look in a bit, I don't remember seeing one however it was quite some time ago that I looked.

I have had a random thought bubble that might be worth testing (I don't have an RCD330 so can't test this theory sorry..)
It's possible that the head unit is switching to the reverse image TOO FAST for the camera to provide an image. If the head unit doesn't get an image immediately it blanks the display.
So the existing OEM camera setup whilst fast enough for the older head units which took maybe 800ms to switch to reverse image by which time the relay had been triggered and the image was being sent from the camera....is too slow for the newer head unit...
So how do you test this? Either supply constant 12v to the camera rather than reverse switched, or try running power to the camera itself from a digital delay relay triggered from the reverse light circuit. Give the relay constant 12v (eg from the boot release motor).

So how are people finding the audio quality/bass from this head unit? Currently have the RNS510 in a 2012 1Z Octavia and for a stock system it sounds bloody amazing with tonnes of bass, makes my old mk6 look pretty average and a stock mk7 system look super lame. I don’t really want to lose that. I’ve read (correct me if I’m wrong) the RCD 330 has 4x20w output which is the same as the RNS510, does that output change depending on which of the 4 RCD330 models it is? I’m guessing there are also other factors at play with quality and amount of bass also though.

I went from the genuine Bosch RCD510 to the Desai RCD330 CarPlay in my Mk6 Golf. My sound quality was marginally better with the RCD330 if anything. It has a richer top end and i can still push the bass beyond the range of my speakers. In the Golf I had good speakers from the factory (much better than those in our Tiguan which I also upgraded from the RCD310 to RCD330. The Tiguan Sound also improved but the sh*tty speakers limited the quality in the bass to mid range).
There's only one case here i've heard of here where the sound quality was worse from an RCD330 and I'm guessing that's a defective unit.
If you're getting great bass out of your octavia it's also a sign of good quality speakers and in my opinion it's unlikely you'll lose that unless your unit is defective or your equaliser is adjusted poorly.
At the end of the day these units are pretty cheap (AliExpress) and if you don't end up liking it you could sell it very easily (Probably for a profit) on ebay or gumtree.

Thanks very much for that. I think I might just go ahead and buy one. Worst case scenario it ends up in some other random VW I buy. Lol
Has anyone managed to get the wheel controls to work with this headunit? I've got a '12 Tiguan with an oem RCD310 and even the bluetooth skip/track info doesn't work as is.
So I have got the RCD330+ from Aliexpress that is both android auto/apple car play compatible . I am having trouble installing a reverse camera and was wondering if there is any issues with using a PAL camera instead of NTSC?
Update 2/10/18: Figured it out it was actually a matter of video formats. Purchasing a NTSC Format camera resolved the issue of blank screen. Might help someone out, if you are getting "Rear Camera Not Available", check to see which video format you have.

Does your Tiguan have the 8 button (MkV golf style) or 10 button (Mk6 style) steering wheel? The 10 button wheels should give you functioning volume and track skip buttons without any extra changes.
