Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

• 5238 is the most widely compatible version.
Unless you have a specific reason to upgrade (ie some sort of issue with the unit) I would not bother going to 5270.
You won't gain any features.

My current version info screen on the RNS510 shows:
Delivery part number: 1T0 035 680 L
HW-Version: H50
SW-Version: 5238

Reading from this link (Volkswagen RNS 510 Hardware and Software (firmware) Versions | my-gti.com)

So that says to me that the available 5274 firmware is the most recent one available that it can be upgraded to. (Volkswagen RNS 510 Firmware Upgrade to version 5274 | my-gti.com)

Is this correct?

Also - the download shows that there's an option of a modified and unmodified firmware. What's the difference? Which is preferable to get?

• Ok thanks for that. I can live with that described known bug of 5238 where the map zoom changes on its own accord.

• Hi all,

I followed the steps to update the firmware of my unit 1T0035680C, using the recommended version 5238.

All good, 'SWL sucess' at the end. Then I checked the hidden menu and apparently the map is still there "Map version 8207". But when I tried to load the map, it doesn't appear on the screen. That's all right, because when updating the firmware it seems that the HDD is formatted and then all files is gone, including the map.

I followed the steps to prepare the SD card with a map, using the map tool 3.0 and I burnt a DVD (that I have at hand) with the iso generated.

Now what is intriguing me... Firstly I checked the SD card, there is less than 1GB in files, what is weird considering that the DVD used to upadate the maps is a double layer. So, why the SD has only 1GB? Secondly, I followed the steps... not turned on the ignition, insert the SD card on the radio, press both up right buttons together with Setup buttom and than insert the DVD to initiate the system to read the SD. When I did, after a while the double red lane screen appeared and it wasn't able to proceed. I had to insert the 're-boot CD' to have the system back.

Am I missing something? The map file is corrupted/invalid? Is there anything in the installation of the map that I am doing wrong? The use of a DVD instead a CD maybe is the cause?

Sorry for the long story.... any tip would be more than helpful.

TIA

• Just load the map from the DVD.
Why add unnecessary steps?

• Aus maps are only around 700mb.
The sdcard method is for western Europe maps which are much larger.

• It makes sense...

The maps were there.... I just needed to get off the garage and run for a while (5 min) to load again. No need to re-install.

All seem ok, but I had the impression that once the map zoom out. I'll keep looking.

Thanks Kamold

• Hi all,

I recently updated my RNS510 to version 5238. After trying numerous times I haven't been able to install the maps back onto the HDD - the unit just won't accept the disk (AUS/NZ Maps V. I've tried the disk on another vehicle and have been able to successfully update maps (the vehicle wasn't running 5238 however). Today I took the car into the VW dealer and asked them to install the maps on as I gave up trying to figure it out myself. They come up with the same problem and said I'd need to change my firmware version. Are there any known issues with 5238 that won't allow maps to install?

Thanks!

• There is not a known issue with respect to maps (at least not with Aus maps).
There are some possible solutions though.
First would be a firmware update that just erases the hard drive contents.
Failing that you can use a 'factory' firmware update which will wipe everything, not preserve any settings like these modified updates.

• Okay will try an update. Any recommendations on which firmware to go to? My unit is a 1T0035680C. Maybe the 5269?

• 5269 is effectively a beta.
I would use a 4020 factory firmware, then update again to 5238.
