  • How can you tell what version the RCD 510 is?

I have taken the HU out and had a read of the labels. Nothing talks about any versions.

'A' versions work and the telephone book populates correctly, however, when pairing on occasion the RCD510 will reset which is lame. It works fine other than that.
    'B' versions work perfectly.

You can pick yourself up a newer RCD510 from the forums here if need be. They pop up quite regularly.

    • Is there an easy way to tell what Bluetooth model my car comes with? It's an MY11 Jetta. The first page of this thread says that the standard VW supplied one does not integrate to the MFD (but the 'premium bluetooth' does), however I have BT controls on my MFD. I can add BT devices and see my phonebook, etc.

So does this mean I've got the premium Bluetooth?

Reason I ask is I'd like to have voice control activated. I had an RCD510 retrofitted by the dealership when I bought the car, and it's the latest one (apparently) as I've got a reverse camera input on it. In fact I had a reverse camera retrofitted and works on the RCD510! Another RCD510 was able to activate voice controls using a BT module that supports voice.

It sounds like you have a late model BT module installed. Easiest way would be to check under the front seats for the module and read the sticker. However since you would need to get VCDS on to it anyway to activate the voice control, you can also check exactly what version etc is installed with the VCDS software.

        • If I understand this correctly, it looks like this new product from Auto Polar will allow people with older VW's (Red MFD) to use new 9W7 premium bluetooth kits and get the Phone menu on their red MFD.

It also stops the battery drain issue for those with older gateways when upgrading to a new head unit.

          • Desperate for help!!
This is what I have: 2007 Golf mk5 with lowline red cluster. I've replaced the rcd300/310 (can't remember which) with a rcd510 unit from a 2009 Eos (bluplunk). This works perfectly along with the iPod kit I already had. I've since installed a BT module and it won't work. The car never had BT but the HU came with one but I sold it as it didn't support streaming. The new one is a 9wz 3c8035730a novero ht-4 unit. The HU recognises that the BT is plugged in because the 'phone' but takes me to a new screen where it says 'no user connected'. If I press 'SOS' it connects to 000 emergency.
The problem is, I can't pair anything and can't 'see' the car with a BT phone. I believe this is because the car is not telling the BT unit to search during ignition because its the lowline red cluster and not highline.
Is there any workaround for this?
Is a different cable or harness needed? Or coding options?
            Thanks in advance,
            Ben.

            • 9wz is not compatible with your setup ie half height red MFD.
You need to control the BT functions via a full height MFD.

You need to get a 9w7 BT unit which is compatible with your setup:

              • Oh NO, I really stuffed this up.
So there must be a difference between how the car sends the BT unit a signal to go into pairing mode on start up. From what I understand, if I had a compatible BT unit, it would receive the signal but the one I have won't because it's a different signal from the white MFD.
Is there no way to force the pairing/setup mode of this unit somehow? I feel that if I can get my phone to pair, it will work fine.
If not, I guess I'll have to sell this unit to fund the 9w7 unit. All I want is to stream music and have hands free calling.

                • Plenty of people are installing BT modules you shouldn't have too much trouble selling it and getting a 9w7.

                  • How much should I be asking for it?
Or should I try and trade someone for a 9w7 unit?

                      1. If its the complete retrofit kit they can be had for 259Euro, plus 40Euro shipping, which is about $430AUD. So price accordingly.
                      2. Yes a swap would be a good idea, then you would only need to post the BT unit and GSM antenna, keep the harness, mic and floor mount as they are the same for both kits.

                      • Just an update to the story, my BT unit is now working perfectly. This was only achievable after connecting the BT unit into a Mk5 R32 with the MFD+ display and pairing my mobile and creating a profile. Then plugged it back into my car Mk5 Golf low line MDF and the BT found my mobile and everything is sweet, provided I never upgrade my mobile. A very big thanks goes out to fellow member Greg32 for all his help.

                          Nice sneaky workaround, good work.
Only problem is when you get a new phone or someone else wants to pair their phone it's not possible.

                          • I know this thread has been massively long, and I've read a lot if it. One question I ask (many a time) is I have a Polo gti and Golf gti and the polo has RCD510 and golf has RNS510. The RCD510 unit has Bluetooth enabled with track/album number on HU but my golf RNS510 just says Bluetooth audio. Wouldn't one think the more expensive unit would have the same feature?

My question is, is it the HU or the BT module, should I swap them over or is it the fact my RNS510 won't support Bluetooth streaming with display options?

I could be the the Bluetooth module. There are lots of different revisions. It maybe the firmware in the rns510. The firmware is not hard to update. Depending on the radio revision will decide on the firmware you can update to. Do you have a hexcan cable to get the numbers from the polo and golf Bluetooth and rns?

                                Hi Greg

Yea I have hex cables. I should be able to tell what firmware I have just from within the HU no?

So your suggesting doing a firmware update before swapping over BT module. I think the one in the polo is a 9W7.
