      • Thanks Jarred,

I got a dirty look from Lloyd for skidding to a stop.

But in my defense - button clutch, 200+ horsepower, no 1st gear, wet grass, on a hill and slick tyres I'm amazed I got it too the presenting area at all!

The plugs were a bit fouled from idling about too so I was having to heel and toe it to keep it idling nice.

The rev as I took off was a little uncalled for but I only blipped it to 5000rpm

        • A very nice looking engine bay, along with the rest of the car too. Function is the best form. Congratulations.

Tell the truth. You're a hoon and proud of it.

I'm nearly 60 and I'm still spinning my Golf on tight roundabouts in the wet because I'm showing off how well my car corners. Trust me, even with grey hair and a white beard I still get people shaking their heads when they have to drive around me because my car is facing the wrong way.

Yeah, I know, I'll grow up one day.

Love that engine bay, that's how all modified MK1's should look!

            Cheers

Well I am pretty sure that will be re-set this weekend as the Beninca Alfa will be at Island Magic. I am not racing but I will be helping a mate
Subscribed to your youTube channel, lots of good stuff there, like me, I just post everything up, ,all part of the fun. You are leaving a lot on the table (especially T12) I agree with you, bit of practice and sub 1.50 is definitely there, but that will take a big commitment. I would suggest you soften the rear at this stage, you have it set up about right, looks like stiffer in the rear than the front, but at this stage softer at the back will make it easier to drive, you will go faster

Did you ever get it back on the dyno? 'Cause it is a hell of a lot more than 118wkW! Pulls nicely, I would guess close to 150 on MPC

              • I've just finished another dyno tune and there's lots to update. New figure is 135.8kW at the wheels, 4th gear, 240km/h. Still more in it yet. Maybe E85 down the track.

I learned that CV boots don't survive 240km/h and close proximity to header pipes.

I'll add more to the story after the Geelong event.

                • Good call on the rear end by the way, I've been running with the rear sway disconnected to get more rear grip, particularly in the wet.

                  • Cheers, been around a bit

                    What compression are you running?
what sort of revs are the peak power?

I have backed to back E85 and it has a lower calorific value, but a great octane (114) so you may not find a great advantage in NA, if your tune is limited by detonation then fine, but other wise the extra volume 22-25% of fuel hurts because it displaces air(!) ie the power producing stuff, and more weight to carry around...
My old turbo Laser TX3 loved it, the Telstar doesn't , less than 1kW extra peak powerbut less torque in the mid range

                    • 13.5:1 compression currently running PowerPlus 105 Octane

Here's the latest plot, ignore the oscillations and the spike just after 4500 there's an issue with the rollers on this dyno at the moment.

                      • It was a fun day out at the Geelong Revival.

The Golf generated lots of interest.

The car's not really that well suited to standing start events like this because of the high (2.3) first gear.

Getting off the line I could spin the wheels but it bogged down until I could get the revs on board.

Amazingly consistent despite my improving technique and increasing terminal velocity.

Here's the times for the 4 runs

                        0:14.4854
                        0:14.2718
                        0:14.1679
                        0:14.1530

And some pictures from the event.

How are the Tarox holding up Peter?
Do they use a Tarox specific pad or a generic size (like stoptech use porsche style pads)?
...and was it an off the shelf kit?

                            • Tarox brakes are awesome, I'm still on the first set of pads.

This is the KMVW0464 280x22 kit to suit MK2 as my car has modified MK2 16v uprights. I'm running the 116 (Track) pads.

I'm not sure if the pads are common to other models. EBC makes pads for these though and it' s easy enough to get the genuine ones from Tarox.

                              • Great to see you had a good weekend, not sure about the time value for 1 min running to 10 hours though!

Had a message from an acquaintance, (a mate of my mate) who does a lot of racing with these in the UK, he kind of knows his stuff, working for a little company called McLaren and all that, any way he gets just over 220 from his, and said the Group A F2 cars "really" only got 250 from the factory and that was a short life motor
Your 135 wheels would be 180hp, so probably 210-220 flywheel, which puts you on the "real" money, as opposed to the salesmen's spiel. Got my calcualtor out and you are at 12.2 Bar BMEP, which is basically better than most people ever achieve, it is rare for a 4 valve to crack any where near 13, usually only dedicared race motorss (ie F1 V8's were at 14.5) and 2 valve spec motors like NASCAR and V8 taxi's at mid 13's
So the only way to step it up is holding the torque with more revs, = shorter life, and for that you will need more cam = crap power curve

13.5 will work with E85, probably not as good a 105 which has oxygen content, but 1/4 the price for 99.9% of the result (ie you may gain a fraction here but loose it there)
