Given the strength of VW manual transmissions I would think this is not a common parts failure, i have seen first gear cogs stripped because of enthusiastic launches but second gear cogs, could there have been an issue with the clutch engagement that contributed or marginal input shalf alignment to second gear cog?
Just a thought please continue.
These 020 gear boxes aren't renowned for their strength although it is usually the diff rivets that are the cause of that reputation.
All these boxes are getting pretty old now could be an age related fatigue thing contributing too I guess.
Box has about 1000km of race use since rebuild so all the bearings should be OK and looked alright when I dismantled it.
Redline synthetic oil too.
Clutch was fully engaged when it blew.
I down shifted to second on the entry to Honda and was feeding the power back on through the corner. At exit I went full throttle and the gear let loose.
I captured it on video too!
I think the difference this time was traction. This is the first occasion I'd gotten my Hoosier slicks up to temp. Normally I'd be spinning the wheels out of this corner, This time it hooked up and blew the gear.
Just how much power and torque is this engine making?
I'm not sure. When I had it tuned at MPC there were issues with getting their dyno setup to work with my little car, I think the plot showed only about 118kW which doesn't seem right. It's built to be in the 250-300 HP range.
The main thing at that point was to set the motor up and do some basic running in. We weren't doing any real power runs as the motor hadn't been run in at that stage.
I've got some clutch adjustment to do and then the plan is to get back on the dyno for a retune. I should find out then what the numbers look like.
I've got to re-tune the car yet to get the most out of it.
The new gearbox is sorted out now and is awesome to drive, much more acceleration than before.
The first time I ran it I had a few clutch issues that I sorted out with some help from Eurospec.
I've got to sort the cam sensor out properly. I need it to run sequential injection. I've been using various modified ABF and KR dizzies and I think I know what is needed now.
Competitve? I'm placing in the top 3 in my class every round of the supersprint series but I'd need to be a better driver if I were to run in sports sedan.
I've still got a lot to learn about driving this setup.
Yep extra rubber lip on the splitter and an eyebrow spoiler. Trying to stop lift. Might have to vent the guards or bonnet yet. Car still wants to be an aeroplane at 220 km/h
