Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I was running with the rear sway bar disconnected to give me more rear grip.
This works much better in the wet, I was trying it out in the dry to see if I need the rear bar at all.
The Commodore was hilarious to watch from behind, it was on the stability control all through the corners, you'll see what I mean from the videos when I post them up.79 MK1 Golf Wreck to Race / 79 MK1 Golf The Red Thread / 76 MK1 Golf Kamei Race Car

I just had to start with what I had to work out gear ratios and defer the cost of a proper gearbox setup for a year.
Now that I'm getting the hang of the car and getting the tyres to hook up properly there's more load on the drive train than it can handle.
The good news is that the new gearbox is built, I'll be fitting it over the next month or so.
I'll make the change to 100mm CVs at the same time.79 MK1 Golf Wreck to Race / 79 MK1 Golf The Red Thread / 76 MK1 Golf Kamei Race Car

any damage under neath other than a dead CV ??
And something completely different.... What oil brand, type and grade you running in the Wavetrac box Pete, have you changed it yet
( looked ok, contaminated etc )Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...
If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??
Cheers,
Grant...

Car still drives, just sounds really crunchy!
No other damage so far.. I pulled the LHS axle out yesterday but it looks OK. Inner CV is fine, I ran out of time to dismantle outer but it looks OK too.
Boots aren't twisted up at all.
I'll pull the RH one one next.
This problem might be inside the box yet.
If the CVs all look OK, I'll put some old axles in and see if it's the gear box.
I was really expecting to find shrapnel in the outer L/H CV.
Gear box oil in this one is Penrite , pretty sure it's 75W90 fully synthetic, I'll have to check the bottle. Haven't dropped the oil yet to look for metal chunks.
The other box had Redline in it and 3rd synchro was problematic from day 1 post reco.79 MK1 Golf Wreck to Race / 79 MK1 Golf The Red Thread / 76 MK1 Golf Kamei Race Car

Unfortunate about that mishap.
I had this happen one time, the driveshaft bolts snapped and the shaft was no longer connected to the gearbox. Shaft spun and was hitting on frame, ground engine making a similar noise to what's in the video.
I'm sure if this happened to you though you would have seen this problem straight away

Nothing in the post so far Mike.
Car's going great, keeps getting faster as I learn how to drive it.
My new gearbox is about to arrive from Eurospec in the next couple of days. That should speed things up a lot.
I keep seeing your car pop up in the magazines.Hope it's all going well.
Merry Christmas to you too!79 MK1 Golf Wreck to Race / 79 MK1 Golf The Red Thread / 76 MK1 Golf Kamei Race Car
