Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • been a bit slow lately but I thoroughly enjoyed yesterday's euro event at lakeside, it provided a much needed injection of enthusiasm. mainly due to a passenger seat session in Barry's TT, thanks Baz and apologies if my finger nail marks are still imprinted in your Jesus rail...

I've been jealous of some of the semi's that are being used on track days so if you can't beat them, join them. big thanks to Al for these two Hankook's and another pair on the way shortly...

been on torqbytes website and keen to order the lpfp pump controller and up the performance, more to come soon...

          • decided to change the oil this weekend as an interim in between full services due to a bit of track time lately. bought this little lot to make the job easy...

and because I didn't want to mess around with jacks and axle stands I picked up these caravan levellers, plenty of room for an oil change once the cars on these...

for anyone who hasn't changed the oil before its very easy with the right gear, thought I'd take a photo at each step incase it helps others. this is the oil filter which is accessible once you have removed the under tray via the 8 torx25 screws (4 each side)...

this is the filter housing after the dust cover is removed...

and this is a new tool I bought for draining the oil out of the housing. you can use other methods but after years of working on cars saving money and making do with whatever tools I had, its nice to have the right gear. it makes it so much easier and cleaner process...

            draining oil from the housing...

36mm socket for removing the filter housing, rotate anticlockwise as usual...

I sat the filter housing on the bowl while i went to get the new filter and some long nose pliers to remove the o-ring...

pretty much all the tools you need to do the job...

and the torque wrench if you're nervous about cracking the housing like me, 25nm for tightening torque...

comparison between old and new filter colour...

and finally back together with an ezitap to drop the oil without removing a sump plug next time...

            • Well done mate - I imagine it is quite satisfying doing all these jobs yourself.

                  • no probs mate, all pretty easy so far it would appear. hardest part was getting all the wires through the rubber grommet and I thought I was on the home straight to having it installed last weekend...

then I realised I needed to take a power feed straight from the battery which stopped play until next Saturday. a trip to Jaycar for wire, crimp terminals and 40 amp fuse is on the cards and then I'm on again...

                    talk soon mate...

                    • well i was meant to be installing the pm3 today but i got a bit side tracked with another purchase...

have to say that breaking traction in the dry in a straight line with 265 wide rear tyres is pretty good fun...

thanks mate, i'll bring it to the track at some point to see what you think...

i've put too much time and money in to the s3 to let it go so i've decided to hang on to it. if i sold it i might not be able to hang out with all the good people of watercooled...

                          catch up soon...

thanks mate, my first track outing is planned for the Sports Driver Training session in August. I don't intend to bring it to happy laps but when i get used it i might have my own happy laps at some of the time attack sessions...

would be good to do another Sunday drive soon, hopefully catch up then...

installed a 40 amp fuse at the battery as per the destructions...
