Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Except the 308 burns 95RON
A 2.0 version equates to 380nm and 160kw with the same torque curve plus a much higher revability.....but you don't need to rev outside of the cc preferred limits of 1800-2500.
Toyota (Aisin) auto 6 spd and never drop out of 6th on motorways.....as opposed to my diesel Yeti which regularly drops to 5th.

    • As far as I am aware we have had euro5 standards here for emissions since 2013 with euro6 coming in 2017. I didn't think we had either but looked it up and we surely do. So any of those cars sold since 2013 would also be in hot water for not meeting that right?

What is irrefutably the case is that the cars (millions of them) breach European and USA rules, and do so deliberately.
Australia has adopted EURO standards, albeit several years later than Europe: see this table from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development. In regards to whether our cars are in breach of the rules, if cars A and B in the following table are the two VWs (car C is likely to be the BMW) that the Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines & Emissions at West Virginia University were testing (the tests that led to the breaking of the scandal), then the emissions well an truly exceed Euro 4 and 5 standards, and even Euro 3 under some scenarios.

Euro 5 started 09/2013 only for NEW MODELS! So I read that as Mark 7 Golf TDI falling under Euro 4

                  • Another 2.2¢...

While it is appropriate VW get a big fine out of this (they lied after all, right?) I for one wouldn't like to see them fined out of existence. Depending on which figures you believe they're either the biggest or second biggest car maker in the world... The people put out of work, the knock-on effects to the suppliers etc. would be horrendous - even if the "good bits" (Porsche?) were flogged off to someone else.

That said I don't think there will be a simple fuss-free fix for our cars - if VW were able to provide the stated power and economy while passing on the NOx side of things then the cheat software wouldn't exist in the first place. I think it's a given we'll lose power, torque, economy or a mix of all three. Until we know what the repair is, how long it will take to be installed on each car, how much impact there is on power, torque or economy then the idea of how much compensation / recompense (if any) we'll get is anyone's guess. The money / credit being offered as a "loyalty bonus" or whatever in the US is just bait that, if taken will no doubt exclude any takers from further action or compensation. A similar thing may, or may not be offered here in Australia.

The idea of fitting urea injection, even if possible would cost VW more than my near 6yr old Mk6 is worth (so won't happen).

As for passing Australia's somewhat more lax emission laws I thought that because the car (in my Mk6 at least) was sold as "Euro 5 compliant" therefore it must be Euro 5 compliant even if the rules in Australia stipulated less at the time. Am I right in this? Feedback welcome...

                    • Which ever way you look at it the cars will have to be made legal, otherwise owners would be entitled to full compensation. A long hard road ahead of them no doubt especially with the latest news.

I've done the VIN check(thanks for the link guys) that came back negative but AFAIK its the same engine fitted to the golf, amarok and tiguan all of whom are in the code crapola.
If anyone could explain why our identical engine has a unique ECU please help?
I've mentioned it before a few times. Your engine is in a north south orientation. They were able to fit the adblue. This is why your car is fine.

Your car will be part of the MLB platform. They are fine.

The MQB platform is for transverse engine mounting. These vehicles with the EA189 engine are the ones in question.

As I understand it, your MkVI would only need to be Euro 5 compliant in jurisdictions where Euro 5 was required at the time of its manufacture, or perhaps importation (let's say manufacture for ease of understanding). Therefore, if it was built before 1/11/13 it only needs to be Euro 4 compliant in Australia, even if it was required to be Euro 5 compliant in Europe at the time. However, it's all academic really. If your model is a pre-1/11/13 Class II car, it must have NOx emissions lower than 0.33g/km; but it looks from the tests undertaken by the Center for Alternative Fuels, neither of the VWs came close to meeting that value, let alone the more stringent Euro 5 standards which they were supposedly built to meet.

                          • I put my name down for the Maurice Blackburn legal fight for compensation ,That is if it comes to that . No one knows yet what our cars will end up with , a 130 kw might loose 10 kw and use more fuel its just a precaution ,

                            • Latest article said depending on the model it could be a hardware and software fix could take up to 10 hours per car

ALL? I have read "Volkswagen said that it had withdrawn 2016 models of its diesel cars from environmental certification in the United States"

That's a long way from "all"...

Is there some other news that we've missed?
