Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Do you actually want to kill the company and (not withstanding the cheat) the great cars they produce, or do you want a remedy to the problem and have everything trend back to normal. Governments and authorities around the world will levy punishment on the company and individuals involved, so past customers don't really need to bay for their pound of flesh.

Whilst I feel sorry for employees and shareholders they lied and cheated deliberately who knows what else they have done. I will never again buy another VW. I'm sure they will survive the German govt and EU will not let them fail.

As Forbes says the as the days go by the conversation and excuses emerging from the VW scandal are becoming almost as ludicrous as the crime itself.

I appreciate the average car buyer may give VW group products a wide birth as a consequence of all the bad publicity now and over the past years, but real VW enthusiasts always find an excuse not to desert the brand. The reasons why we enthusiasts buy VW group products will not change because of this stupid mistake or decision.

            • Today's 'The Conversation' has much of interest on the subject of VW's diesel problem......including 'compensation' options.
There is also an article from a diesel technician (and now academic) suggesting a very bright future for diesel.
Plus links to other related articles.......definitely worth a gander.
(somebody might even do the 'link' thingy for me)

                +1,
there is no doubt that VW makes great engines and cars. No one can change the history doesn't matter how bad scandal may appear presented by media.

LOL so you buy things solely on the end product on not how management run the business or the company's ethics?

So you'd send your kids to a school that knowingly hired convicted sex offenders? I mean, you're paying for the quality of education at the end of the day, right? Who cares if management is knowingly breaking the law? That was like 2 months ago, the Principal has since resigned so it's all good now.

Which top school with great results have sex offenders as teachers? You should think about a better example.

Luckily VAG doesn't run any boarding schools.

Speaking of school - did yours not teach you how hypothetical scenarios work?

                          How far does that extend?

Ford has had a scandal over past failures to disclose full tank problems, resulting in deaths: Ford has a number of subsidiaries, including stakes in Mazda and Aston Martin. Toyota was involved in scandal over a failure to disclose unexplained acceleration problems, resulting in deaths: Toyota owns Lexus and has a stake in Daihatsu. General Motors had a scandal last year involving ignition switch failures, which resulted in deaths: GM owns a multitude of brands, including Chevy, Opel, Vauxhall and Holden. Chrysler, now part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), had a scandal many years ago over odometer tampering: FCA owns, among others, Ferrari, Jeep and Alfa Romeo. Honda executive in the US were involved the largest commercial corruption case in US history: Honda owns...well...Honda. Anyway, if you look, the list gets longer and longer, and that's just the vehicle companies.

So, how far does someone extend that philosophy, and if not avoiding products from all these companies, and their parents and subsidiaries, what justifications make deviations allowable?

You can extend it as far or as little as you like. It's everyone's personal call to make whether or not knowingly illegally polluting the planet will millions of cars worldwide is something they care about. Or you can write is off as something as small as changing the odometer for the sake of resale value - that's your call.

I was just highlighting the attitude many apologists are adopting, you know the "oh well, I don't care about that stuff, all I care about is how it effects me - so... about that mpg" attitude.

I'm sure this scandal this won't kill the marque, I mean, if being backed by Hitler doesn't give you a bad reputation nothing will lol.

Sure, okay but notice how it doesn't say, ".... without notice at any time", or words to that effect. This to me infers that any such changes, if they were to occur, can only happen any time along the manufacturing/delivery process up to the point where the owner takes possession of the vehicle and drives off the lot.

I don't think the disclaimer is intended to provide carte blanche to the manufacturer to make changes at any time at their discretion after the vehicle has been delivered. If it did, I'd say the ACCC would have something to say about that. There are implied limits to the manufacturer's authority to make such changes.
