Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Picked up spark plugs (NGK BKR6EIX), new headlight globes (Philips Bluevision H7, H1, W5W), engine oil (ELF Solarix LSX 5W30), new sump plug and filters (oil, air, pollen, fuel - all from VW Barlo Five Dock for ~$120 total), and a freebie bottle of windscreen washer fluid.

Ready to do my 90K service on the weekend

Edit: Not going to change my gearbox oil, since I did that at 80Ks with Redline MTL. Might do it at 95 just so I know it's super-clean and fresh

Edit2: Also going to take Hooti3's 17x7 Denvers, I like the OEM wheel look but a bit more size and width won't go astray! Going to fit them with KU31s when I get hold of them.

If your going to go to all that trouble, might as well buy some low dust brake pads.

        • New brakes and a stud/nut conversion thanks to AUTOsports!

Brake feel is better. Stops on some sort of coin!

          • Got a phone holder from the US delivered today. Amazon.com: Cigarette Lighter Plug Car Mount w/ USB port for Universal (Black): Cell Phones & Accessories

Actually bought it more for the van & didn't expect it to sit in the Polo because of the cigarette lighter location, but it's able to be bent in a way to avoid contact with the gear stick.

Not using it to charge the iPhone - i've got the xcarlink for that.

Golf V is WEDEL.1, the Polo is WEDEL.3.

WEDEL.2 is awaiting for the camper trailer, if I ever feel like making another donation to the SA Govt.

                  • yes, and they didn't turn black from brake dust

Finally fitted my rims with the semi-slicks on - the car looks somehow more purposeful.
It will be interesting to see the impact on fuel economy vs the skinny Michelin XM2s

                    • Went for a Sunday drive with my new tyres - http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...a-54493-8.html

Fuel economy went down by 10% from the stock tyres (about 15% worse than the skinny Energys). AND THE NOISE!!!

                          • If I was driving on that tyre I'd expect more than a 10% hit on the fuel economy.

                            • Maybe butcher the flange that mounts to the stock exhaust manifold and go from there. Need to mount the sensors back in unless you have them mapped out

I'm actually quite happy doing 2:30 on the lap when it went bad but I wanted to get under 2:10 (and never got to use my motorsport map which should have given me an extra 4 kW which may have got me there)

I can show you how I mounted my extinguisher so that it is easily removable so it doesn't affect the underseat drawers and seat run.
Also, I'm trying to get FlyingGTI to make some of the "stickers" in plain vinyl without glue backing so they can be easily removed and reused.

Here's what I wrote about the tyre the vic motorsports thread. Enthusiam or pig headedness - take your pick.

At Siberia, it pushed more (missed the apex again) and seemed to spin up a bit on exit with a bit of vibration through the steering wheel.
Up over Lukey heights, the understeer got really bad and the vibration was quite noticable as I crested the hill.
Out of MG, I deliberately pointed the car more than usual and clipped the apex fairly hard at turn 11 to try and fight the understeer - at this stage the vibration was getting pretty bad and the car still understeered on to the rumble strip on the exit.
On turn in into turn 12, the vibration was blurring my vision and at the apex, it felt like the wheel was about to fall off.
Fearing the worst, I backed right off down the straight and noticed some smoke coming from the driver front wheel arch area. The steering wheel was still vibrating badly and the car was now pulling to right so I pulled off just after the pit exit.

All in all, a destroyed tyre was a relief vs what I though it might have been. 2:30 wasn't too bad a lap time in retrospect.
