Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Cheers Gavin. Might take you up on that. I knew you would have some.. Just didn't necessarily want to bother you for every oil change. But if you don't mind then I'd be grateful for one

OK point taken expect a call tomorrow... TIP part two today - getting the new one in. It was pretty horrible!! Fingers crossed I got everything back in properly. I'm a little doubtful because things weren't quite lining up like I hoped they would, but I don't know if that's because I didn't get everything plumb, or if my Chinese eBay TIP is just a little out of spec.

Worst part was realising the little hose down near the turbo inlet was originally sitting on a barb fitting that wasn't on the new pipe. So a quick trip to supercheap at 4:15 for a double bayonet hose joining thing. Finished it off as it got dark, and went for a drive round the block.

Don't know if its going to offer any huge gains (I might drive it gently until I can have another look at it). But it gave me a sense of accomplishment - for a half as*ed wannabe occasional hobby fiddler - I feel like I took the whole car apart and put it back together!!

        • The barb can be removed I think. If you take the clamp off. TBH a new brass fitting works best IMO.

"But it gave me a sense of accomplishment - for a half as*ed wannabe occasional hobby fiddler - I feel like I took the whole car apart and put it back together!!"

This is the point of doing it yourself, buy the tools if you need them and think about the $100 an hour you are saving. $70 TIP costs $200 to fit.

          • Yeah I did enjoy it in a perverse sort of way.. And each time I get under the bonnet there's a couple more bits and pieces I recognise and understand. Still a lot more I don't know though

Agreed, I've been pulling the turbo off over the weekend, got ~80% of the way through before requiring assistance as to the next few steps. Now sitting at 98% complete as I'm in need of a spline drive socket to remove the oil and water lines. Oh so close. Hoping to get the sucker out tonight. The TIP came out very painlessly, contrary to what I've read. The majority of the job has been painless but time consuming, lots of jumping up and down under the car, over the car, back under the car.

As for putting it back together, no idea.

My turbo bolts had loosened (stretch?) and bent too, been on for less than 6 months. They were new, genuine VW bolts on a VW manifold. The funny noise I'd mentioned previously I now believe was in fact a very marginally loose turbo bolt. The turbo wheel seems to have minimal/marginal play, nothing that feels overly untowards. Anyway, hope to get it to the turbo builder this week.

              • I got away with using a 6-point allen key on mine

Not a job which i wish to repeat.

Good luck with it! I wouldn't even know where to start pulling the turbo off. Hopefully the rebuild goes nice and smooth

                  • It wasn't today but last week i installed Remote Central Locking in My Polo 9N after receiving all the parts and bits off ebay and programed 2 Fob keys myself, bit of a pain to get the ecu out but wasn't to hard. Cheers.

                    • Any tips on cleaning the 02 sensors? I have a new 02 sensor though would still get the CEL come on after clearing it every few drives. I'm curious if the cause was due to the turbo blowing oil, thereby covering the sensor. While the car is in pieces I thought it might be wise to clean the sensor, any thoughts as to cleaning, or is my logic flawed?

Off to MTA Turbochargers tomorrow to have a chat about rectification.

                      • Did you use a spacer for the sensor?

                        • Oil will cause problems with the sensor, but it would have to be a lot. I run an O2 sensor in my 2T rgv250 and it doesn't kill sensors.

Not quite sure to say one way or another - excuse my ignorance, I pulled it out and it didn't appear to have any other attachments to it. The CEL would come on when I bought the car, Jimmy replaced the sensor and it still comes back. I assume Jimmy would have noticed if it wasn't right.

Any tips on what I'd be looking for to know myself?

                            • Can't really clean them Sean. Wipe the worst of the soot off with a cloth and refit it.

                              • which sensor is it that you're looking at - pre or post cat? Is the CEL a cat flow error or something else?
