Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Stock wheels and tyres (205's) on mine.

        Machined the front brake disc

While working on the brake, found grease on P.side wheel inside surface
Trace that to the CV, discovered the CV boot was split and joint on that side has excessive free play in it
So more work to be done

Getting the suspension looked at tomorrow. I'm hoping they say it's rooted, you'll have to buy new coilovers.

Good times by the sound of it

Are you down again later this year? I'm keen to get to wakefield again, and also need to try Sydney Motorsport.

All good fun Sean, if things go to plan I hope to be back there on Sat/10/Oct. (NSCC track day)(Nissan Sports Car Club)
I've washed the Girl & put her away for awhile, playing with my motor bike @ the moment.
Then will get back to the girl, stripping down a few things small & big to try & improve things, but still no turbo probs.
The track was slippery as hell, max temp was 7% with no sun & a snappy wind, so it was hard to get good times.
                Have a look @ natsoft, I had 21 laps doing 1'11"s & under out of 33 laps.
But I loved it, its a lovely disease.

Awesome, October may actually work for me to come down and join. Once the turbo is in and some k's under its belt I'll be in a better position to commit. Probably 1-2 months, if they'll take another polo...

I'm in Nowra this week, it's freezing, ppl in Goulburn must be struggling. I think it was high single figures in the morning when I ran at wakefield and it does seem to be a track that's sensitive to temp.

Good work on the lap times. 11's is my goal, pending of state of tune with the new turbo will see if that's realistic.

                  • Considered selling it. I think I've mentally moved on.

Anyone keen for a K04'd GTI, or know someone that does?

What do you feel a hankering for?

I just picked the PoD up from the mechanic and all is good again

                        • Gearbox has developed some noises

                          Noise #1:
                          gear: neutral
                          clutch engaged: noise occur
                          clutch disengage: noise gone

                          Noise #2:
                          gear: 1-5
                          drive: engine
                          rpm: below 1200
                          clutch engaged: noise occur
                          clutch disengage: noise gone
                          sounds like amplified Noise #1

                          Noise #3:
                          gear: 1-5
                          drive: wheel(engine braking)
                          rpm: below 1700-2000
                          clutch engaged: noise occur
                          clutch disengage: noise gone
                          sounds different as it develops

                          Noise #4:
                          gear: 1-5
                          drive: engine
rpm: somewhere between 2000-3000 (not quite remember)
                          clutch engaged: noise occur
                          clutch disengage: noise gone
different to Noise #2, but disappeared after Noise #3 appear

At first glance it looks like a failing release bearing
But I just had new clutch kit installed so I'm thinking that's from inside the box
Also had an ex-VW-mechanic to listen to #1 and #4, he suspects input shaft bearings

                          ----------------------------------------compulsive separating line, please ignore-----------------------------------------------------------------

LSD and 6 speed conversions are beyond my budget at the moment so I'm considering a full rebuild
Got quoted 3K-5K from a place, but most of it is labour
Since I have access to equipments like hoist, and a rebuild kit is just over $300 landed from the UK
I'm thinking to do this myself
I'll check the release bearing just to be sure before I go any further

                          Any suggestions/opinions would be appreciate

                          • Is the release bearing the same as a throw out bearing? I'm familiar with that terminology from my Subaru days, which my sooby's throw out bearing was sticking, would make an unpleasant noise at high rev shifts. So a very different situation to what you've explained. Still did another 30,000kms and track days, sold to mate who did another 30,000km and off loaded just as the clutch started to slip at over 150,000kms.

                            • Another thing is I had 2 runs in 3rd under WOT for data logging
Figured with gear ratio, final drive ratio, tyre circumference and the data, a rough 40-100 time can be calculated
After having some fun with the calculator and here is the result
                              first run: 4.71 sec
                              second run: 4.68 sec

Not sure how fast is this, anyone tried timing for this value?

Yeah it's the same part, just called by different names by different manufacturers
I wouldn't worry too much if it's just the release bearing

If the bearings in the box gets worn enough they could seize up or have too much free play
Either way they would ruin the box
