Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • Kmart tyre and Auto did a tyre rotation and fixed a punctured tyre on thursday last week, washed the car yesterday to see only 4 of the 5 nuts on one wheel (front passenger)... of which only ONE was done up. Dumb founded. Emailed their customer care last night and will be calling the service centre today.

Needless to say that I've since checked all wheels and nuts, they're done up. Simple oversight perhaps, but bloody shocking to release a car without double checking. I suppose next time I'll have to do all the hard work myself.

Whats worse, places like that you go to tighten via machine.

You should use a torque wrench to tighten them accordingly.
        What’s behind you doesn’t matter..

        • Fitted a custom stainless steel 3" dump with hi flow cat (less than 100 cell apparently )...car pulls very hard now from about 2500rpm all the way up to redline. big shout out to trevor at the muffler man in prarhan, awesome quality work and my car was in and out in a day.

The little k03 doesn't feel like it's running out of air any more at high revs and spools up a lot faster and harder (boost now peaks at 21psi whereas before it would only peak at 19-20)...there were posts a while back where people were claming the 2.5" was better than the 3"...loss of low end torque and what not - I would say it's quite the opposite.

I had a decat 2.5" pipe designed for a Mk4 golf that I bolted on and the 3" pulls a even harder...and is less smellier...

Also fitted some DBA rotors and Remsa pads...time to tackle Winton again and hopefully break into the 1:45s!

Wheel nuts sometimes come loose for reasons other than shop incompetence, and it's worth investing in a torque wrench (they're not all that expensive) and checking the nuts are all set to manufacturer specifications from time to time.

I've never had a problem with the Polo but have had a wheel nut come loose on another car whilst out for a spirited drive - not sure what caused that and thankfully no harm done but checking the wheel nuts with the torque wrench is now my standard operating procedure before taking that car out.

            • once again, whilst the polo is off the road, my story is "what did you do with your replacement for the polo nissan micra 1.3 rental car today?"...

last couple of corners at yarra bend - heading toward the highway, around the 30kmh, up the hill, down over the round about and the bridge, and then the right hander at the famous lookout point (i know the bend well - i go there to exercise, after which i have a few beers, smokes, and chicken wings, to help me maintain my stately figure)....

seriously, the micra is so fuggin nose light, that even though it takes you up until the next corner to gather speed, by the time you turn in, you dont need to brake or shave anything off...

i became a cornering thorn in the side of a dude who was chillaxing with his man-bro in the passenger seat, around those turns, and then onto the sharp right hander off the chandler onto the eastern, city bound... in a silver AMG E55.

              it's a rental car - i'll pick a goddamn fight with ANYONE i can, it's all a bit of 1.3L slow-orse fun....

it must have irked him somewhat, though, to have my little nissan march crawling up his bro's mancave, because the moment he was able to... ehem... straighten up whilst onramping to the freeway, he let that 5.5L AMG rip like thunder... GAUGHD DAMN those things are fast in a straight line...

i hope he wasnt cranky - i dont care if i lose, im a good sport. i wound my window down, hoping to say "man, impressive! loved the sound!".... but he ignored me behind his tinted windows, both passengers looking smug, sporting shaved heads with street fighter "guile" style haircuts...

watch yo euro cars, and watch your freezers too - "Guile" loves exotic seafood..... (anyone who's lived in the north of JPN will know what im referring to, "jay dee em as frak" gay orse pretty stickers aside.....)

                You forgot to add "/rant".

haha, but seriously, love those cars. Nothing like a C63 exit speeding out of a corner.. lol.

I said it before and I'll say it again - NOTHING can replace lightness and as soon as anyone tries to add power/grip to a Micra, I'll bet its handling goes downhill in a screaming rush. It's why the MX-5 has never received the massive power boost, mega tyres/wheels treatment from the factory 'cos it won't work.
The base model Polo Up! will be interesting on this front.

And if we are going to continue on the "cheap crappy korean/where ever its from, car like that" theme, I once had a great time harassing a rather agitated Ferrari 308 through some nice winding, roads in Vaucluse in a rental Ford Festiva.

                        • Greg, nobody is debating the benefits of a light car, it's just we struggle to fathom why the two of you feel it necessary to bombard fellow polo owners with reasons as to why we should care about 'lesser' cars.

My mother previously owned a micra and I'll save my polo brethren from reading pages of diatribe about it, but I will go far as to say that it was hands-down, the WORST modern car i've travelled in/driven. Yes small, cheap, econoboxes can be fun to fling about if you have very littly care for them, that's why rental cars are the most fun cars available to us, but there is no way known that i'll suddenly start doubting my own car because you've 'hassled' greater cars with them (this seems to be about the only argument the two of you present).

Feel free to start your own thread about how great the all and mighty Micra is(and watch it top the charts), but only respond to this if it is in reply to the question - "what did you to your polo today?".

                            • Dropping my car down at Camden GTI tomorrow morning (long drive, but worth it!) for the timing belt changeover, clutch swap and to get the lower control arm front and rear bushes and front strut mount bearings changed.

Also getting the gearbox mount and anti-roll bar bushings checked out to see if they're degraded and need replacing.

Looking forward to how much the ride quality should be improved. After that's finally sorted it's time for a tune and diverter valve + air intake replacement.

Actually, I'm trying to put this sub thread to bed by pointing out to Scotty why he is finding the Micra fun and why is it almost certainly futile to try and "improve" it with more power and grip.

Back on the official topic, my car is in the 'shop for more mods + further investigation for my 'clunk'. Good enough for ya?
