Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

19psi tailing off to 16psi or so, why? No change before and after. Just smoother onto boost / slower feeling!

Pressure drop across the intercooler is what's important. Not the pre and post fit pressure in the manifold. If the pressure drop was higher than std sidemount. The ECU would drive the turbo harder to compensate, creating heat and reducing performance.

          • Yeah that's what I was curious about - whether the smoother spool up was actually due to a pressure drop, but now I see what you mean Gav. You wouldn't see a pressure drop at the MAP sensor would you because it'll just be spinning the turbo harder. You'd need a pre intercooler gauge too really see whats going on wouldn't you.
I 'spose the smoother spool up could be due to a bit of delay due to longer pipe work?

            • There is a lot more pipe work ....

              • And from a bit more driving, it's just a bit more lag. Car definitely feels better than you thrash it. (Chances to do that have been rather slim as I usually only drive in rush hour....)

                • I did my intercooler today as well. Should have been a lot easier than it was, but I have the old sexy fingers.. everything I touch is f**ed. Still its on now (and fingers crossed no piping comes off on the way to work tomorrow!).

I did one quick test around the block and it seemed ok - no more or less lag than usual... but it'll take a bit more driving until I really notice it I guess. I did think perhaps my boost was a little down - usually 4th gets me about 17 - 18 psi, but it looked like it was peaking today at 15. Too early to tell though. Hopefully its cooling effects outweigh any slight loss of boost (if that's even a real observation).

that's about it now for the car, until I get a massive raise and can buy some coilovers

                        • oh ok I think I see what you did now. Looks like you stepped it down post cat to fit onto the stock back section yeah? initially I thought you'd re used the stock cat but put it in backwards! Looks good. Wish I'd done something to minimise the heat like you have.
