Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • lol regarding the LCA bushes - i actually bought some SEAT ones at the same time that i bought the clutch, so when these poly ones go bad, i'll be swapping those in - the engine mount might be interesting, as less NVH would be great, but when it comes to the LCA bushes i really feel that they have helped improve the feel/feedback through the wheel A LOT, especially in dodgy situations/ when pushing on.

and as for low rpm - yeah man, im very surprised too. everything i've read, and been advised, has been along the lines of "no no no!!! dont get a smf because it will rattle your teeth out and you'll want to sell the car two weeks later, it'll be that bad".

yes, there is more vibration, but so far the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. im not sure if it's a case-by-case thing, and that i just lucked out (lots of people seem to be saying that smf = loose fillings).

if you were worried about NVH, then you could purchase the southbend "silent" clutch kit in advance/ anticipation of your dmf failing - it has a smf, but very quiet, according to the guys at darkside - and it's only 120gbp more (420gbp.... we are so lucky, the clutch kits for the 02m 6 speeds START at like 800gbp).

    • With the inserts in place, the LCA bushes should be stiffer than the SEAT ones. The torque arm bush with inserts wouldn't be as stiff as the full polyureathane one, though.

      • Got new tyres (KU31 in 205/40/17).. So, to celebrate the fact that I am now scrubbing a lot less than I was with 215s, I went low for *****s and giggles...

Sorry for dodgy phone pic, it's really rainy here.

a 205 is a MUCH better choice for the ET32 Audi wheels! Its what I ran and it was perfect

            • I got my Passat light switch and LED park lights this week... Due to me having fat hands and stubby fingers, I ended up partially removing the front bar and headlights to get the bloody things in!! Going to be fitting the light switch today hopefully.

              • Will I be commuting, cruising or tracking today?

The TD wheels weigh about a kilogram less than the OEM ones - I had thought the difference may have been larger.

                • Fitted PD160 intake.

New grille badge from Oriental Parts for $20.00 shipped. Quality is not great but OK for $20.00. It did require some simple plastic removal at the rear (as marked in photo below) to lock into the factory hole. Based on the quality of the badge I would be very wary of any non genuine parts sold by Oriental Parts.

                    • So much for the mechanic pinging me $80 for a pollen filter and $60 for a fuel filter... $37 and 20 mins later and I managed to get both done without incident.

maybe im just a bit conservative or old school, or whatever, but I. LOVE. TYRE. SIDEWALL. lookin good, greg!!!

p.s. being a sunday, i didnt know if anything was on, but next time you're at the track, let me know so i can bring the spacers (as well as watch/ help out) - im seriously thinking about taking the 11mm spacers off the back of my car, so you may be able to play with those, too.

                            • Dropped it off to get the steering rack fixed and hopefully not entirely replaced.

I have a feeling this may hurt.

                              • Did a nice spirited run along yarra boulevarde and as i was pulling onto Studley park drive I noticed I had quite a harsh noise coming from my front left brake rotor...turned out to be a tiny stone that was caught between the rotor and the pad...I'll give it a proper once over tomorrow morning but I'm confident it hasn't done too much damage (probably only 10 rotations max whilst the little fcuker was in there).

I'm pretty stumped as to how it could have happened really
