Batteries in boot relocations now require (as I have been told) pyrotechnic disconnection for in the event of an accident so as not to cause fires and or electric shocks. Sounds like a bit of a toss idea, but those kids that got cooked in the car last year around the corner from where I'm sitting writing this would have survived if that car had of been made 2 years later than it was.

    • Just went into the garage for a look and stuck my track pump on it. Seems to open up straight away, even before the gauge moves. All it can be. Can't see why it has worked for 40km though and suddenly stopped.

It even has a clip over the 2 nuts.

I had a look in the Forge DV and there's no O rings in it. WTF Not sure when they vanished or maybe more importantly where?

Found a turbosmart semi recirc, so I have fitted that for some fully sik tunes.

        Please explain ??

Does it work the same way as a safety switch, cut of in a 1/100 of a second or something

The pyro bit sounds like an airbag style job. I can see that working on a new BMW or something but after market, not so sure?

          • Ok the boost is back.

Schoolboy error on my part, fixed with zip ties. So after messing with the actuator, DV and not finding anything. The next step was going to be the turbo.

Deep breath, then as I took the new air filter out I realised my flexi pipe was getting sucked down the middle and making a perfect seal onto a cone in the middle of the filter. Effectively suffocating the engine.

So a bit of rearranging and 2 zip ties later, it's all good again.

            • Those solutions are always the best, good to know it can be fixed for the cost of 2 zip ties.

              • The polo has run good for a couple of days after fixing the airfilter. So I thought it was time to fit a fuel pump. I got a USRT drop in a while ago and got busy this afternoon.

The fuel pump is for a MK4 GTI so I had to swap over the tops of the baskets. The Polo one has a different return path from the fuel rail.

You can't really see the difference in the photo though.

MK4 has an inlet pipe running off the bottom of the tank cover, like the outlet. In the Polo the return just squirts straight back into the basket.

It starts, it runs, it doesn't stink of fuel.

Yeah, along those line or like a seatbelt pretensioner. It so the power is cut on the even of an airbag deployment (from what I have briefly skimmed over) or rollover so that if there is a fuel leak it isn't ignited by the power cable. I don't know what date it came into effectiveness though...

                        • Been a bit quiet on the Polo front the last 2 weeks. The Squib had another DNS, jumped in at work 10 days ago and he was running nasty. Danny came over and we swapped coilpacks over. No good.

A quick trip up home to grab some tools and a set of plugs.

First job I pulled out the plugs, 2 were wet and 2 were dry. So I thought a couple of plugs had failed but it didn't seem that likely.

I had brought back a compression tester and long story short, nothing in number 4.

The following day I filled up my compressor and took it down in the S3. I pressurised number 4 through the plug hole with the compression tester pipe. nothing coming out of the inlets, so it had to be the exhaust side.

As I had loads of stuff going on with the day job and tuning it sat at the airport until this morning.

Then I ripped into it, pulled the cams out first on the off chance a spring had broken. I found the problem but it wasn't a spring unfortunately and the head is coming off in the morning.

One of the exhaust valves had broken at the collets.

Taking some spare valves out of the scrap head.

Tomorrow, I'll be off to the engine shop with the head and the spare valves. He wonders if the valve got damaged when I refitted the cams. I have to admit the was a good clang when I turned the cams over before I fitted the head on the engine. Maybe that was the valve cracking and it took another 500km for it to break all the way through.

                          • Damn, you've had some bad luck with that car, gavin, but I guess it was reflected in the price you paid for it.

Very sad that someone could have mistreated it so badly in the past.
