Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • My best ever is an indicated 5.5L/100 on a 36km trip. Stage one tune only. Never got over 80kph though due to speed limits so cheating a bit perhaps.
2001 Bora 4 Motion Sport now used by number two son
2011 Skoda Octavia Scout now with Underground Performance tune
2010 Jetta 125 tdi dsg for the misses - Impressed
2006 Polo GTI - Enhanced by some of Gav's magic - Absolutely loving it

A quick trip around the block. Going to put it down as serviceable for the time being.

I had an exhaust place organise some flanges, so I could have a downpipe made. They turned up on Friday, so even though it's not 100%, I am going to get the downpipe made up at the end of the week. Even though I won't be able to gun it hard. Otherwise I'd be into the New Year before getting sorted.

Just went back through the thread and came to this one. I reckon it's been run a lot harder since I put it back together, than it was before I knew what had gone on inside.

Well built motor, done 3000km in it nearly.

Paid Greg for the motor last week, so that should be here in Brisbane soon. I have got a mate with a Ute (doesn't everyone) and organised an engine crane as well. Not sure yet how I am going to do this job.

Just thinking out loud, it would be less effort, I think, to take the head off and swap heads over, than pull the engine and box out. BUT, if the head is off, that would be the perfect time to do the rods. Then maybe I should look a bit harder for the big port head I fancy???? Which makes buying the engine pointless. Back to square #1.......

        • After happy laps and lunch with Gavin and his family I had a drive of the GTI. Iv driven BFLAT's polo and a stock GTI and have to say Gavin's goes... Wow its just boost out of corners, you have to be careful getting on the gas early in corners others wise you would be in someones front paddock. Gave irt one really hard squirt, spun 2nd and knocked on the door of $1.60 in 3rd in only a very short distance. Once we had pulled up to fix my s-cargo to only notice one of the intercooled pipes had comes loose. I want a refund and full boost please Gav. Good little jigger.

          • I tweaked the actuator back up to 6PSI and it's mental again. I just drove back from Mt Mee after riding up in the rain (hardcore Rule #9) on a bit of cheeky acceleration it had the traction control flickering hard in 5th. #howlongwillitholdtogether?

                  • A bit of free time this arvo after a brake upgrade this morning (not my Polo).

I thought I'd see what the pressure drop is across the Seat Sport. One could argue that my method isn't massively scientific. No calibrated gauges, one is in BAR and reads to 1.5 the other is in PSI which reads to 25PSI.

Anyway, I took some dodgy video with my phone down a quiet back road. I can see it runs just over 25 PSI at the turbo outlet. I have tapped into the line that feeds back to the bottom of the N75.

The inlet manifold gauge in BAR, goes just over 1.5.

So I reckon there's about 3 PSI drop between the turbo and inlet manifold.

                    • Been a bit quiet but not been idle though.

Brake upgrade fail. A shame because it looked really good. Then the wheel wouldn't go on, plus the pads overhung the edge of the disc....

More success today though. Got new tyres, Bridgestone RE002.

                        • DBA 400 discs, like Anthony got. No problems with them.

I bought some mk5 GTI calipers and brackets. The brackets were no good because the mounting holes were too far apart for the Polo hubs. I had already got some S3 brackets though and the calipers went straight on them.

I got a set of MK5 pads and they are too wide front to back, so overhang the edge of the disc inside the caliper. You can see the back edge sits ok and leaves a few mm unswept but Anthony's are the same.

Then to cap it all off the wheel wouldn't go on, wrong offset/spoke design/fat caliper.

A shame as I bled it and everything, then had to pull it all off again. At least I only did one side.

I could have told you that

Get some MK3 VR6 calipers, the later ones with the 288's (te early ones had 28omm rotors) which are the same as the MK4 GTI, V6 and V5 ? Bora, Audi TT etc

                            • Thanks Troy LOL.

They work with some 325ish discs and different wheels. I though it was worth a go.

Not many mk4/VR calipers on the market, unless you know if any?
