Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

What's going to give up or what am I going to do to the car?

I got that spare engine after Christmas, that's in bits. Waiting on the rings and gaskets from the States. Getting a clutch kit and some other stuff.

I am taking the head in to have it pressure tested and the valve guides looked at. I am sure there's no cracks, but it's cheap insurance.

Got that blower from Lito and some other handy parts to bolt on too.

Ok so after all will you end up with one rebuilt engine and spare? What about the gearbox, are you going to open it and have a look at it while it is out? Cheers Al

I think I have created enough work for myself Al, without doing the box as well. I haven't had it crunch in ages, since I did the synthetic oil change.

I have started to wire brush the outside of it, so it looks like aluminium, instead of outback. At least on the bits you can see from above.

Down some crackle black on the cam cover, very pleased how that has come out.

Probably do the inlet manifold tomorrow to match.

The head has been dropped in for it's check out.

              • Your right Gavin "I think I have created enough work for myself" I agree and that was exactly what I was thinking when I posted that.

Absolutley right about synthetic oil gear oil change being a crunch saver. Jimmy highly recommended doing the synthetic oil gear change when I first got this Polo. Should be the first thing any Polo owner does to this manual gearbox! Thanks Jimmy.

Sorry but I have to ask. Is there any reason to consider port matching the manifold to the head? The end. Or is it?

The exhaust side is miles out but in the right direction. ie The manifold holes are bigger than the head, so no step to overcome.

The inlet side is matched pretty good from production. The whole package is supposed to be good for much more power than I'll be making. Although I am the proud owner of a die grinder

                      • OK Gavin the die grinder is not going to get a workout!

I am 600 meters from Calamvale Shops which got hit by a cracker of a rain and lightning storm tonight.. only for the brave.

Some brave VWW youth enjoyed it thought. Cheers Al
