Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Gavin's cheapy but getting more expensive GTI

It pulled the same code on Jesse's previous car when the keyway sheered off.

Funny thing is the crank gear went back to its original position after it sheered off, lined up the timing and it was spot on LOL..which made us puzzled for a while. Leak down test showed it lost compression on cylinder 2, 3 possibly 4 or 1 or one of them lol.

It was only when the engine builder pulled it apart then we knew the exact problem. In US, 06A and 06B engines have recorded cases of sheered keyway but very rare on the 058.

VCDS gave a cam position sensor fault. Stupid ECU doesn't know what a bad belt is like.

Just creating a shopping list. No need for valves, got the spare head. So going to get rings, basic install kit and a manual tensioner conversion kit with a Gates racing belt.

Will update on the maker of the belt tomorrow.

Only seen a bad key way on a G60 Passat personally. We used to always fit a pulley bolt from a MK1 GTI DX engine. Instead of the stretch bolt they came with.

I still have one in my spares cupboard.

          • Well, it was a factory belt a Gates one no less. I'll do the photos tonight at work. I did wonder about something else nipping up but the starter had no trouble over coming that?? It's lightly kissed 2 exhaust valves, there's marks on one piston that would blend out.

Damper looks ok but the tensioner was dated 2004.

I am suspicious of this bottom end though as the turbo has developed a heap of end float. Just like the previous one. I wonder if the bad cam bearing has lead to low oil pressure in the turbo? I did clean out the oil feed pipe when I fitted this one. I have another pipe of Lito's Golf which I will use on the rebuild instead. Once bitten twice shy!!

            Watch this space.

            • Gab, would the swarf from the shagged cam etc not be clogging the engine oil ways / turbo feed?

              Cholesterol for cars!

I'll be having it all apart for a look. I did squirt degreaser through the feed pipe before connecting it to the replacement turbo.

My theory is that the oil pressure was low due to the bad bearing to cam clearance by the cam pulley. So although the pressure switch was never triggered, excessive wear has been going on.

I'll pull the pump apart as well. Auto-topsy tomorrow

                    • Further progress today, Nothing found in the oil I dropped out of it..

Pulled the turbo off first, then wheel out the bottom end while connected to the gearbox. Doing it alone on stand with a trolley jack it pretty easy.

Pulled the gearbox off and removed the clutch as I need the tin work to fit on the other engine. Clutch was a VW one but probably wasn't going to live much longer.

Yeah, I am generating quite a collection of scrap from this car. LOL Not sure I can get away dropping it all in the main bin, some of it will recycle. LOL
