    • My late 2013 built MY14 Polo GTI is currently undergoing an oil consumption test. Has chewed through ~4L of oil in the last 4000kms. Currently, the car has done 7,300km.

There is much more to this issue than the way the car is driven.

Agreed, the missus is hardly a hoon and does 99.9% of the driving and boy does it burn.
I drove it while she was FIFO and it used very little.
I always drive in manual and shift around 2700-3000 rpm and with the oil temperature shown.

Only case ive seen no oil being burnt was on briskoda where some chap in italy used some custom pistons and vola.

        • Went through the forum and if I am correct according to Gav's display picture to reach mark C that would mean the car went through about 2L of oil and at that point that is when the engine oil light appears??

          • if anyone wants anything done about their oil consumption after your dealership keeps on telling you BS directly write to Volkswagon Australia and the matter will be better sorted.

            • So apparently VW/Skoda are installing new/revised oil squirters onto the 1.4 twincharge engines to try and reduce oil consmption issues. My bro who works for Skoda told me this a few weeks ago (after me asking him how many Fabia vRS's have come back with oil/DSG issues).

I haven't seen any mention of these oil squirters on here - anyone had this done yet? These engines squirt oil onto the bottom (or underneath) the pistons to cool them - i assume these are what have been revised.

I don't have specific knowledge regarding VW engines but in the truck and bus diesel engine world world that I've worked in for many years, oil squirtes are fitted below and squirt oil up inside the piston to aid in cooling the piston. Not sure if this applies to these engines though, first reference I've heard to this.

                Cheers

The point about them being fitted is accurate, I'd have to check the TPI's list to see if there is one regarding it yet... Makes sense though as another band aid solution...

No, bottom of the dipstick is approx 1 litre. Your oil light should definitely come on if you have burned 2 litres though, the engine only holds about 4.5 litres!

thanks gav for the clear up so can safely assume light should come on within 1.5L or even exactly on 1L

So if these engines already have oil squirters (and are just being revised) then it stands to reason that you should lose SOME oil.

In other words you really should expect to lose some oil (but anything above 500ml per 1000 km is out of spec).

                        Unless this oil is recycled?

Oil squirters are pretty common & not a recent idea. It's just a way of directing a stream or spray of oil to a specific spot. In this case it's up under the piston crown to cool it from the heat of combustion. It should just fall back into the sump & there's no reason why it should increase oil consumption.

You really shouldn't be relying on the light to ensure there is sufficient oil in the sump. They are a warning device of last resort

                            • When I was doing one of my oil consumption tests I could not check the oil and the light came on at about the 870km mark. VW said that it had used 1.6L. That test was a little abnormal as there was a lot of running in very heavy traffic and running the car while stationary.
