Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • There is no clip & no heating was required on mine, it's flexible unlike the main plastic line from the engine which is bigger in diameter. I stand by my comments & I have a heat gun, so if necessary would have used it. The middle return simply pulls off, mine pulled off the rubber plug which I then pulled off the manifold. I simply pushed the middle pipe on with the rubber plug inserted (as delivered from VW) when re-installing, takes a small amount of effort - verify it's fully seated by inspection with a flash light.

It's an easy 10 minute job......

Merry Xmas to ya all and thanks for taking the time fontana.

As i have guessed it is different in the Cupra. The middle return does not plugs in with the rubber sealing at the end of the middle return, but it actually has a proper quick release safety clip (same as the main return line) with a proper sealing end. Because of this the length of the middle return is too long, and if you try to install without shaping or cutting a small piece of it actually folds out completely.

I knew i needed pictures for this, which i now got , but turkey comes first.

      Thanks again.

I don't consider myself lucky m8 but i can see where you coming from...

I also own a VW golf mk5 GT and had virtually no issues with it in 5 years and 60K kms. It uses no oil between 15k changes, and i mean NO oil. BMY euro 4 engine of course.

I consider the cave/cthe engines a major failure of the group. I consider their chosen path of action (act like nothing happened and deal with its case separately instead of a redesign and recall ) an insult.

Reliability it is not the group's strong point...

New breather hose/pipe fitted a while back, no oil issues and NO black SOOT all over the rear bumper from the exhaust! Just noticed that today! It's a MIRACLE!!!

I know Edge is a different blend in Europe but have you considered another brand? It might just slow the consumption down a bit more.

The same for me, I only had to spray a little amount of silicon oil on the rubber connection to facilitate insertion of the middle return, because of the uneasy position...

@Varnak, we had almost the same oil consumption (about 1 liter per 10.000Kms), now after pipe replacement mine seems to be halved and main intake pipe (just where the middle return fits into the main) is completely oil-dry...
Check it before and after the pipe replacement, you should find the same...

It was pretty much the same with Divinol and Valvoline. Do not think it is the oil. My fmic had plenty of dilluted oil in it when i cleaned it up. Will monitor the consumption and decide if the 45 euros spent for the pipe was worth spending

@kawabanga: it is different on the polo, as i said above. I checked my mates gti. Cupras have a proper quick release mechanism, but they source out the same pipe as a replacement, a bit different installation procedure. I have read your post, which is the reason i bothered buying the new pipe. We ll see if it makes a difference for me as well, as reports from users are contradicting. Thanks anyway neighbour.

                  45€?? Here in Italy it's 63€...!!

Anyway, IMHO it's worth spending: the intercooler will be dry and more efficient...

62.7 here as well minus, dealer discount of 20 something per cent. If i was not on a rush i could have waited for the paperwork and get it on warranty( 5 years). Stealers are not mouthy in this country

Update on mine, 2000kms of really driving the car enjoyably, 1.5mm drop on the dipstick of Liqui Moly. Compared to Castrol Edge Longlife Professional (half the dipstick) in the same kms with far less spirited driving, proves to me that the Castrol product is rubbish in this engine, only reinforcing the fact is that recently VW released a statement now saying recommended fill is now Fuchs TITAN C3.

Castrol for me? No f**king way!

                      • Is that from a complete fill of Liqui Moly or simply topping up the Castrol (or whatever is in the car from new)? I've been topping up with Liqui Moly, and the level is still going down a little, but maybe it's the stock oil literally going up in smoke.

                          • My GTI is now just over 9000kms and the oil light came on. Checked the stick, just a little oil showing. Dropped into the dealer and they topped it up with two litres. I also bought an extra 1L bottle to keep in the car just in case.
