Modern (non-racing) 2 strokes engines use less oil than that!! Assuming you are getting 10l/100km or betterfor mileage.

Has anyone dared to try a slightly heavier grade of oil?

    • This thread should be stickied as a "Known" Polo GTI fault...its passed 50 pages i think its ready to be stickied now... just like the "What have you done to your polo thread" so new owners can easily find it stickied to see new mods, or current ongoing problems with Polos/GTIs

Threads like this one are posted in almost dailly, so it would be the waste of the top space on the page. Also using the search will find you not only the thread you looking for, but also the post that matches the best your question.

              • Dealer topped me up today - 800mls she took (done 2800kms). They didn't even check to see if the car was from them, just took it and filled it up straight away. First time the dealer has actually done something right!

So if the 'running in' oil is supposed to be thicker, why are we on a long service cycle here in Australia? If we used a thicker oil and had shorter service intervals, would that ease the pain?

I'm interested to see if it now starts to burn through the oil now I've had the top up!

                  Just to clarify:

                  "Time & Distance" regime
                  • Fixed service intervals of 15 000 km/1 year.
                  • May use either 502/505 or 504/507 oil

                  "LongLife" regime
                  • Variable service intervals, anywhere between 15 000 km/1 year and 30 000 km/2 years.
                  • May use only 504/507 oil

Unless something has changed, most Australian vehicles are delivered to run on the Time & Distance regime.

                  • As known, from January 10th is avaiable a different piston ring:

                    03C 198 151 M The old one >>09.01.2012
                    Composto da:
                    Segmento Sup. 76,5x1,2
                    Segmento Inf. 76,5x1,2
                    Anello Raschiaolio 76,5X1,9

                    03C 198 151 Q New one from 10.01.2012>>
                    Composto da:
                    Segmento Sup. 76,5x1,2
                    Segmento Inf. 76,5x1,2
                    Anello Raschiaolio 76,5X2

Notice that the scraper ring is increased of 0.1mm

                    Will be the solution???

                    • in engineering 0.1mm is a large difference....especially in cylinders.....That is actually a big difference....Tighter ring seal....prevents oil from creeping up into the combustion cycle. Thus where your oil is going...

                      • I'm not sure it will be the final solution...

Mine GTI is fine, 0.45l in 6.000Kms is normal...
Why some other GTI have an high oil consumption from new?
Why in some other case the oil consumption starts after 10.000/15.000Kms?

I know one guy in the uk running 0w40 and since being filled, it hasn't used a drop and he's pushing 225hp at the wheels!

Acko, yeah, 0.1mm is a huge difference. I spec tolerances at 0.25 as a generous tolerance for riveting applications in die castings, 0.1 is normally standard. On a motor which should have precision machining and honing, 0.1 should be achievable realistically.

                          • I have another new about the new piston rings code: it seems that those rings must be combined only with new pistons that are completely different from the stock ones.
The old are stamped, the new are forged...

                            • You'd have to use new pistons because the wider oil ring wouldn't fit in the groove. The only other alternative is to machine the rings grooves as I had to do when fitting Morris Minor rings to my ISO motor scooter. That was a vintage bike, so there was a lot of fat in the pistons. These days I doubt there'd be enough metal available. Especially in an engine that's already had issues with ring land breakage.

Possibly the forged pistons are to fix several issues in one go.
