Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Had a wheel alignment done and it's back to perfect. When I put my first wheel on, I think it was out, I had an alignment done then and they corrected it but could never get it perfect. Now with this wheel it must have gone back to the right spot and now post alignment it's perfect. So all good now

I'll post my old wheel in the For Sale thread later, I'm not ready to sell it yet as I want to make sure I'm comfortable with this new wheel.

    • Where in western Sydney

Thanks for the write up @aussietig
I would really love to do the flappy paddle steering wheel mod.
Which workshop in western Sydney did you use?
      Thanks

      • aussietig did a DIY but if you're not up for it then any decent workshop should be able to do the swap.

Just don't expect a VW dealer to do it as they most likely won't do it unless they supply the parts and that will cost big $$$$.

        • Does anyone know if a polo gti steering wheel would work on the tiguan?

Polo gti steering wheel looks identical to the mk6 gti

If looks the same, then in theory yes. But nobody here can guarantee the gamble you take.

            Choose your own adventure!

Also need to get access to a VCDS cable to activate the flappy paddles.

              Thanks. Will take the plunge.

Are you able to code? Or know if anyone in sydney?

              • I no longer own a VDub. Go to Audio subforum for list of members that have a cable that can help.

Takes 2 mins and a few mouse clicks once connected to the OBD2 port, with the Ross-Tech software on a laptop.

                  Polo is PQ25 platform.
The steering wheel is a slave to the central electrics module over a LIN bus.
That's different to a Tiguan or Mk6 Golf which is PQ35. They have a steering wheel control module mounted in the steering column which controls the wheel functions.
So you can use a steering wheel off a mk5/mk6 Golf, or a B6/B7 Passat, or another mk1 Tiguan or a scirocco etc.
If you don't already have buttons on your steering wheel then you'll need a new highline multifunction steering wheel control module.
If yours already has buttons but just no paddles then you just need the new wheel (and airbag if you choose a sports style flat bottom wheel) then 2 mins of coding as has already been explained.

Thanks kamold and Aussietig. Saved me hundreds of dollars and less headaches.

If anyone is interested there’s a polo gti steering wheel with airbag intact located in sydney for $200 on gumtree.

                    • If you’re based in Sydney, then definitely Kamold can help (if he wants to) and PM him re any charges.

Also knows what he’s talking about more than anyone (including me who has left the VAG stable).

I still have a Mk7 flappy paddle steering wheel lying around somewhere if anybody is interested. Prepared to sell that for a loss!

But more for those with 2nd Generation Tig, which I thought I would be upgrading to, when I decided to buy it (at the time) in advance of its release.

                        • How important is the earth cable from the horn casing to the back of airbag in the tig? My 2012 tig airbag has it but seems like the mk6 gti airbags don't.

What is it for and how would it affect operation if I were to install one without the earth wire?

                          Thanks

                          • All installed

                            Golf R MK6 DSG 2011

                            Airbag part # 5K0 880 201 L 81U

It came assembled with the correct harness as well, but had the older style clip plug to clock-spring. The only difference is between the yellow plugs from the older and new version is that the Older version is Spring loaded locking clip and the newer versions just have a plastic clip lock design.

DSG shifters work with simply one click long coding on obdeleven under the Steering Column control module.

                            Very nice swap over
