Hi all
re the purchasing of a mfsw with paddles for your tig[those with dsg]
I cannot speak highly enough of my dealings with "sarj" of Autoteile of Coventry in the U.K.
Sarj went above and byond the call of duty to get a mfsw with paddles to me.Initially there was aproblem with the first shipping company who temporarily lost my consignm,ent and then they refused to ship it due to the airbag.
At additional cost to him Sarj went and picked up my wheel and resent it airbag included and it was here at my door within 8 days.
A nice brand new "R" genuine wheel.I was wrapped!
So if any of you are contemplating this retrofit contact sarj@uvw.uk.com. I am amazed at his excellent service.

If any perth fellas wont to do this retrofit, again I cant speak highly enough of Joe and Phil at Elite Euro in Perth.
I took the wheel up to them the day after I received my wheel just to show them,and Phil's response was "do you want us to fit it now"
This was at 2.40pm in the afternoon and by 3.25pm I was driving out the door with the mfsw all fitted and coded up.
Wonderful service from these two guys.Their enthusiasm to please the customer just amazes me.I wil not be going anywhere else for work on my Tig.Just the last week they did my 15000k service at a cost much cheaper than the stealership price.

How much does the flappy wheels cost you?

The mfsw with paddles was approx 425 gbp[british pounds] plus shipping.Equates to about $700 Aust. for wheel only.
You would have to contact the seller for the latest prices as the dollar fluctuates daily.

I managed to pick mine up for $475 + $50 shipping so $525 landed for a Type R steering wheel with flappy paddles (no airbag). I think I've got the airbag bit nailed (finally). From what I can gather the part number for the airbag is 5k0 880 201 (as per Aussietig's photos) and the last letter which may be anything from A to Q is date related - later build dates having a later letter.

The main difference as far as I can tell is in the connection cable which may or may not be supplied with the airbag and this can be either for multi-function wheels or standard (no-buttons) entry level Golf steering wheels. However from various other posts the connection cable from the Tig will do the job nicely so all you need to get is the multi-function wheel with (DSG) paddles and the airbag. If you can get the bits together you'll save on shipping. There are a few sellers out there that sell steering wheels with airbags - just have to wait for one that comes up with flappy paddles.

As for airbags there are a few sellers out there - though as it's an airbag and a safety item probably something you want to be certain is 100%. Prices range from around $250 to $400 or so shipped.

I'll post the result here once I get my airbag and have it fitted.

If it was me ... I'd get the airbag that has the similar manufacture date as the wheel. That's just the most logical answer.
So suggest you ask sellers the manufacture date of each airbag revision they're selling.

Suggest you study the pics again in my first post. I had a D version airbag and was supplied a A version wiring harness.
But I didn't end up using the A version wiring harness supplied and used my own.

Now based on logic again and go through the pics in this thread again, Ryan R mentioned his airbag clip was different to mine.

So it is possible that's just what the revisions in the airbag part numbers reflect.


More importantly, I think you need to have the right SWCM. Again look at my first post for the part number.
I would hazard a guess, that you need one at least the same or if not higher than me in the last letters.

The million dollar questions here are:
What MY is your Tig?
Do you have white MFD and multi-function buttons on your existing SW?


But post up your SWCM part number (once you find it using VCDS) and I can give you an opinion on that while you're still undecided about the airbag.

OK so thanks to Transporter here's the VCDS output for airbag and steering wheel from my 2011 125 TSI Tig - built April/May 2011 from memory. And yes I have white MFD and multi-function buttons on my steering wheel - not sure if that makes a difference.

I just wasn't sure what MY was your 125TSI.

In a roundabout way, just pointing out that if you had an older Tig with the RED MFD, then you'll probably need a new SWCM also for this mod.

Basically as a rule of thumb ... it should be plug and play for those with white MFD and multi-function buttons.

Yes I noted that my steering wheel has the same part number as yours - 5K0 953 521 AT (as per your second post with VCDS coding pics). So hopefully everything is just plug and play with the new wheel/airbag. About to bite the bullet and buy an airbag - may look to get one with a cable just in case...

On a related topic, does anyone know if there is any special tool for removing the airbag? I've seen some for earlier Golf's but not for the Golf Mk6 or Tiguan.

Otherwise I'll just have to do what others have done and use a couple of screw drivers (carefully).

If so, How do i find out the part number of the airbag that will fit this steering wheel? And also a steering wheel module control for this SW? I have a MY2010 Tiguan. Does anyone know? Or do I have to bring the wheel to the local VW dealership to find out? I hear they are not helpful in this area due to warranty issues?

It certainly looks like a Mk6 sports wheel with a flat bottom. You can check the part# for the steering wheel - should be something like 5K0 998 537 B. At least that's the part# off my Type R wheel so it should only be the last letter that changes if anything.

The airbag part# is 5K0 880 201. There are a few ebay sellers - though you will have to look outside of Australia for this.

I am buying my airbag from the US seller, though he does not have/supply cables with this airbag. From previous posts you can just re-use your Tigs existing cable, but if you want to be safe get the wheel with a cable suitable for multi-function wheel.

If you don't want to have issues with your insurance I'd suggest getting a qualified tech to install it. If you do this though they may want to purchase/supply the airbag, otherwise it will be all care and no responsibility.

Either way getting somone qualified to disconnect/reconnect the airbag is probably not a bad idea as there are explosives inside and not something you want going off unexpectedly as 1) it's dangerous 2) you'll have to buy another airbag

Re the SWCM if you can get someone to do a scan, just check that it matches up with the part# from previous posts - 5K0 953 521 AT. If it's the same you should be OK. If it's different then you probably still should be OK but you'll only find out once you go to fit it.

Given that the Tiguan has a multi-function wheel minus the paddle shifters I think you should be OK as there's likely only a couple of SWCM - basic and multifunction. The multifunction will have all the smarts just have the option unselected for the paddle shifters in software. Simple thing to turn on once the wheel is installed.

I should have my steering wheel fitted in the next week or 2 but my Tigs a 2011 model (last of the "old" shape).

It certainly looks like the genuine article as the wheel has the distinctive red stitching that is indicitive of the MK6 gti wheel.
My wheel which I imported from the U.K. [complete with airbag] is the "R" line type and only has the black stitching with the R symbol on the lower part of the wheel.
The only thing "missing from my wheel was the small wiring harness that attaches to the multifunction electrics of the wheel.
That was overcome by simply removing the small harness from the original wheel and plugging into the R wheel.
I think if yiou can find a VW qualified specialist to fit the wheel then thwere wont be any "warranty" problems as such.
My mfsw with paddles has worked perfectly since the retrofit.No problems at all.

I forgot to add also that you shouldnt need to get another control module as my Tig is a my2010 and my installer said that the electrics are already setup for this retrofit, so you shouldnt have a need for parts apart from your airbag issue.

Not sure what you could do if we all said that it's a fake made in China.


As for insurance issues ... just let your next of kin deal with a faulty airbag that didn't go off!

But I'd suggest after they've cashed in on your funeral plan and life insurance first.

Yes... I wasn't actually askin if this was 'fake' or not. I was 99% sure it's the MK6 GTI one but because I don't see enough of Golf's ard, I was wondering if what I thought was right so that I am able match an airbag to it.

Thanks for the tips. I've just taken the sticker inside that says SK0 419 091 E ASY. So what wld the airbag part number be that will match this exactly?
