They would stick out further than the guards so you would need a set of arch extensions ($500 or so) to make it legal.
8.5 ET35 site dead on flush at the top.

The problem is that if you go up to 9 inches wide it sitcks out too far so 8.5 ET35 is pretty much the best you can get while being legal.

Mine originally came with the 19x9 et 33 Omanyt wheels which sat too far in for me and I had originally planned on using 10mm spacers. I'm now running 19x8 et 35 Golf R replicas with 20m spacers and they sit just about perfect now for me.

Are you sure those specs are accurate?
If so, the new wheels should actually sit further in than the omanyt wheels.

                • Yes the specs are spot on. R Line wheels are 19x9 et 33. I didn't want to go more than 20mm wide spacers so opted for them and I find the look perfect. I just need to lower it slightly now.

Dan, i reckon it must be the angle from where your photo was taken... Yours should be a little bit wider than mine, as i have 245 tyres compared to your 255's, with the same size rim. Mine are almost flush at the top.

                      with 235 width tyres?

                      • Yes the tyres on the Omanyt wheels were 255 width and I've kept them on for the new wheels. When it comes to changing them I'll probably move back down to the recommended 235 width which means I lose some width but depending on which deals I can find I may try and source some 245 instead to compromise on looks.

One thing to consider when widening the track is that alot more crap from the roads will get kicked up onto the doors. Luckily I've been ok with that so far but apparently it's vastly reduced if you have side steps fitted.

                        • I was wondering how we could fit 255 width tires on the 8" R rims

                            • I'm running a set of 19 x 9 Savannah's ET 33 with 255's
Stuck a level straight across the wheel from top to bottom and they were perfectly flush with the guards.
Not too sure of what the definition is in regards to being within the guards to be legal in NSW.
Given that the Savannah's are genuine VW wheels hopefully wouldn't attract the law enforcement, if so one could always pop the fuel cap and look at the tyre info plate and point out to their friendly law enforcement officer that 255/40 R19 are factory fitment.

Will have to agree with Naresh though, they do throw more crap up the side of the car

Bear in mind the savannahs weren't an option here apparently due to failing ADR's (i believe due to poking out too much without the arch extensions.)

I believe the rules actually state any part of the wheel/tyre can't extend past the bodywork as i know a mini owner up here (QLD) that got done for having the bottom of the wheels poke out even though the tops tucked in with camber.
