Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I reckon you should put the OEM taillights back in, reminds me to much of a Lancer.

IMO the car looked heaps better on the R50 reps, i've never liked those style of enki rims.

On a good note i do like the way your always changing things to the car so keep it up, look forward to seeing more changes.

      Your car looks great!

A quick question if I may... What were your thoughts on the apr exhaust? Did you find that it's become too much of an attractant to boy racers? I enjoy being a bit of a sleeper
Btw you don't happen to have a sound clip of the exhaust?

I've had cars with loud exhausts and now I'm over 30... Really not keen on something too loud... It's got to add performance above all .

Have you thought of going k04? Apr sale....
The exhaust sounds stock as i only have the downpipe, not the catback section.
The engine noise is a bit greater but you can barely hear any difference from outside.
I contemplated getting a sports muffler but i think i should keep the back end stock to keep the super sleeper/soccer mum facade.

K04 is a nice idea but the cost is pretty prohibitive and Stage 2 is enough for the street use i think (especially in a manual)

If i was going to spend any more i would look at a good suspension set up and a nice set of tyres.

I will swap the stock tails back on when i get some free time and see how i like them.
It is a shame the hella ones come with the chrome infills, the standard ones have them too but it's covered by a red lense.

The Omanyt rep's looked awesome, probably one of the best designed wheles for the mk5 platform but they were not to good for performance and really, how often am i going to be staring at the car rather than driving it.

The Enkei's are growing on me thoguh and the drive is significantly more responsive, so much so that the Finance Officer noticed it and she is not an enthusiast.

I am hoping to get this puppy out on the track later this year and see how it runs.
Might also see if i cna do a run up the strip.

      • So the car is now 1 year old and the service indicator "bing's" at me whenever i turn it on.
Cool feature but very annoying lol.

Car is booked in for it's first service with Prestige and Performance as they are close to work and were available this week.

Getting a hammering from the finance officer and other family members about wanting to track the car in the future.
        Not looking likely.

Team V thats a shame, been thinking we should have a modded tigs day at Lakeside. Give everyone a chance to see first hand different mods people have done and for the track, chance to do some vids of acceleration, speed etc in a 'responsible' setting. Reckon a vid of two tigs side by side, then one giving it the boot in 2nd or 3rd would really help illustrate the get up and go. Also give people the chance to compare (as a passenger, maybe not a driver) how big a difference various mods have made (such as raised versus lowered, stage 1 and 2 versus no mod etc)

On another Q, re your wheels, I might have missed in previous posts, but whats the difference in total weight (per wheel and tyre) b/w your old set and the new one? Clearly the wheels are lighter and you are noticing a real world improvement which suggests the wheel and tyre combo is lighter, I'm interested in knowing what the difference in net weight for each wheel & tyre is to put into perspective. Its certainly got me thinking whether I go for larger diam wheels and tyres or not - if the weight goes up, I'll see the opposite effect. For me might be an arguement for sticking to smaller rims but with larger tyres

          • I think there's more to it than just the weight. 19 inch is a popular choice due to the tyre profile, lower profile means stiffer sidewall which translate to lower sidewall roll, this will improve steering feel and directness. By installing larger tyres might defeat the purpose of putting it there in the first place, depending on your goal that is.

Sorry to hear about the hammering team_v, it would provide us with lots of info if you do track it.

            • Jimbo, weight difference from old to new wheels was 4-4.5kg per corner.
I used the old tyres on the new wheels so the only difference is wheel weight.

It really comes down to what you ware going to use it for.
If you want softroading (i assume since you have the spacers) then i would go stock wheel size with a taller tyre.

99Reza i am pleading so hopefully i will be allowed to do it at least once.
Will update if i do get the chance.

How many top-ups required? Radiator coolant reservoir, washer fluid, brake fluid, what else would be checkable at 15000?

My guy at volkspower had a look at the brake pads (1 minute) & reset the service interval (30 sec's) & basically said "i can't really justify charging you for that"... I did the oil/filter/plug myself at 10K ($105), will do the same at 20K & get a 'proper' service done at 30K...

Was interested to hear they are recommending a 7500 'in between' oil change to their customers, especially after 60000k's

                        • hey team_v, with the nanolex sealant treatment, do you use anything after it? like the nanolex nanowax, or do you just use the sealant? Do you use their shampoo?

I just use the sealant on mine, nothing else after.

I am going to get the shampoo when the one i am using now (Duragloss) runs out.

I think there would be a benefit to waxing the car however mine is barely out of the garage during the week so i don't find it necessary to use wax.
The sealant is fine for my purposes.
