Aaaah... Thanks for that guys. I'll have a look at getting the spare key. I've actually got a spare transponder (the black casing w the chip in it) and had it recoded. But the blade is of another VW. I could possibly find a blank blade that be fitted into the body so that I can flip it open like normal?
Some of the eBay ones I just saw is only the straight blade. N the other ones comes w the body n blade but just the shell ie no chip inside. I guess I can transplant the blade over to the spare body I have that's already been coded yea?
Any general locksmith will be able to cut it accordingly?
Thanks MGV for ur PM! Let me know once u've done urs.
You will probably need an automotive locksmith, none of the general ones could do the key for me since the bore is in teh middle of the blade.
Should cost around $30-40 (10% of the price of a new oem key)
Nice work again with the video, mate! A couple of 'interesting' corners with the sun in your eyes! Watched the others too, from the guy with the citroen, great footage! Watched you into a corner after passing him & thought body roll to be less than i expected to see when pushed at speed. Good stuff!
Top speed today? ESP on or off? Average consumption still around 20? Man, i wanna have a go !

Yeah as these progress monthly into winter the sun is becoming more nad more of an issue.
I do have the tint strip and the video camera is sitting at the base of the headrest as opposed to my eye level so normally it isn't too bad.
ESP off for the second half of the event.
Top speed was 174 on the back straight, could maybe have hit 180 but i didn't want to outbrake myself as it's the first time i have done that course and it is notoriously hard on the brakes.
Avg consumption was 21l/100km.
Not bad for a $25 event including breakfast (plus tyre/petrol use haha)
On ur advise, I've got my blade key cut at a automotive locksmith this morning. just a recap... I was given a free brand new transponder w key for another VW. I had the transponder recoded for my car and it locks/unlocks the doors fine. But since the key that came w it had the wrong cutting, I cldnt start the car w it.
The new transponder w wrong blade:
I bought a aftermarket shell w blank flop blade from eBay (shipped from HK) cos I want to swap the flip blade over to the new transponder. Had the blank blade cut this morning in a place in Altona VIC. Here it is:
The cut wasn't too bad and seemed to follow the grooves of my original key. So I'm happy w that.
Got a couple of questions, which may appear to silly:
The locksmith told me not to insert the key into the ignition because 'it may reset the system' and only try using it to unlock or lock the doors. If I try inserting the key into the ignition and try starting the car, would it b ok if I unlock the car first w my transponder in my pocket? Since the transponder is not connected to the new cut key?
2ndly, how do u swap the new blade key over to the original new VW transponder casing? I saw that photo where the key casing 'splits' halfway. But the blade is on the other half which holds the chip inside I believe? The locksmith said "don't try to open up the original VW casing because u will break something inside n not be able to use the remote. U cannot swap the key over." he's an old guy so I'm not entirely convinced that it can't be done. Anyone did a flip blade swap before, could kindly advise please??
That one is a bit out of my league to be honest.
I only got a standard blade cut as a spare to take into the surf while i leave the oem key hidden safely away.
I know that when i use the key blade to unlock the door you have to re-lock the door first before it will allow you to unlock with the key blade, so that may help.
Might be best to call or email a dealer to ask about the other issues.
I believe the key has to be encoded to match your ecu so it may only work for the doors until it is coded correctly (the expensive bit)
