Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Ok, so Luke from AutoInstruct has replied with pricing. This is the link to their most up to date JB1 for our GTI 40 Years / Clubsport.

      • Only interested in the JB1 personally. I don't see anything in the Peregrine module that is not offered in the JB1 (selectable and adjustable maps via the cable) and the BMS reputation in terms of R&D testing, reliability and after-sales support is excellent. For the prices offered, there's no contest really.

Another thing is that according to George, every rev2 JB1 will be upgradeable to the JB4 when that will be released (obviously at some extra cost) that works with absolute boost pressures (instead of differential) and I believe has some extra goodies like map selection through the steering wheel's stalkers etc. (although no idea if they will be offered on the Golf, they are on JB4 for BMW applications).

PS. Obviously + Cable for me

        • Thanks for the insight Ringo. Let's just focus on the JB1 for our Group Buy then shall we?

          • I am about to put money down on one of these or a MK7 R. Very few options so they are about the same price.

Why the GT40 over the R?

            • Would bigger numbers (say 10 buyers) mean a better discount? If it does, it would make sense to post it in the MK7 section. After all the unit for Rs and Clubsports is exactly the same and the one for GTIs just has a different firmware, but all have the same price.

Clubsport if driving hard/cornering is your thing and you appreciate a great chassis with a razor-sharp, direct front-end with loads of feedback from the steering. Also if you want a car that looks and feels more unique and special than its competitors (beyond the Golf range) both inside and outside. And obviously if you do track days.

R if you have traction worries and putting all 300bhp down under every condition matters most. If you prefer a subtler look that goes more un-noticed than the CS and also for drag-racing (and 0-60 times bragging ).

Both great cars, but each one is best at different things.

I have the same dilemma before too.

To me I just work it out what I like and what I don't the most then see whether I can live with/without it. For comparison purposes, I literally made the dealership put these two cars side by side. Test drive both if you can.

I find R feels more mature and subtle whereelse 40th gave me the feel that has more character and "cheeky". Then it downs to the drivetrain.. 4wd or fwd and I'm happy with fwd hence I go with the 40th.

Both have the pros and cons and I guess it's really personal. I think whichever car you choose, you won't regret anyway.

                    Just my 2cents.

The very question that a lot of us pondered over a few months ago. For some varied opinions, take some time to read this thread:

                      http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...-r-113771.html

I concur that we should focus on the JB1 from AutoInstruct and I'm happy with the price. Direct from the states works out to $628 AUD delivered, so lets support the Aussies! BTW I purchased my OBDeleven from AutoInstruct last week and am now having a great time modifying all the electrics as per VCDS tweaks. Recommend you get one if you're in to "playing" with settings as I am. Make sure you get the "pro" upgrade for maximum functionality.

Was just about to purchase a VCDS cable, obviously for a lot more money.

What's the difference between the two?
For this price, looks like a great alternative.
