Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I did read somewhere that VW are doing free map upgrades with each service for the first 5 years.

Pretty straight forward. Am I missing something as to the all the fuss about getting dealers to update etc?

          Hi

Does it update the software as well or just the map?

You know anywhere to update the software? or have to go to a dealer?

              • Yeah unfortunately unless there is a tpi you will have to hassle the dealer for an update.

                  Posting in the right thread...

So after requesting a maps update in my latest service I was told by South Yarra VW that there were no updates for my car. This is despite the new airport road and peninsula link not being in my maps and the data says 2014. So I rang VW customer care and they said we're not sure. 3 days later they say yes, there are updates, call your dealer. I called the dealer and they said no there are no updates. I said well VW told me there is, so can you find out please. I booked it in and said I will wait around while the maps get updated, when I got there they said they need it for the whole day. I said don't be ridiculous you only need to copy a file onto the card and it should only take a few minutes....silly me.

I've downloaded the new maps, put them on the card and now have the problem from the previous post that the Infotainment unit shuts down completely a few minutes after turning it on. WTF...this is my third VW and the owner experience has deteriorated significantly with each one.

Can I just have a Golf R with maps that show me where I am and no can of ball bearings in the engine bay?

They replaced my head unit and software is now the new version which has the new roads you refer to. I did not download any new maps for my unit. The only thing I've updated is my POI. This allows me to have the location of all speed cameras. VW had my car for the day doing the head unit and software updates.

Hey mate...does your car have CarPlay? Probably stating the obvious here but I connected my phone via CarPlay and am using Google Maps as my nav...works and looks much better than the in-car sat nav. But yes...that doesn't solve your problem.

                      • Hi Gents,

I'm new to the forum and owning a VW so apologies if this a newbie question... I work in IT so I should be able to understand this stuff easily once explained.

I just bought a 2014 GOLF GTI MK7 in Sydney Australia - it has a Discover media 1 device, it was running 2014 maps and I just upgraded them today to May 2017 upgrade.

I was wondering, does the Nav upgrade actually also upgrade the rest of the discover unit? because I'm trying to find out how to download and install the discover media software upgrade (like radio, bluetooth etc) to install any fixes that came out since 2014 and I couldn't find anything... right now all i could find online is just info on how to upgrade nav so didn't know if the two are linked together :/

                        System Info:
                        Device Part: 5G0035846A
                        Hardware: 040
                        Software: 0430
                        Nav db: ROW 2017/18
                        Media codec: N/A

                        Thanks again for your help!

                        • Firmware updates for these aren't in the wild. You would have to ask a dealer and they will only update if you can describe a fault that is specified in a technical bulletin advising them to update.

That's a question you'll have to ask your dealer. My situation was similar to yours but I just snuck in with the 3yr end of warranty service back in Feb. They upgraded me to a V.2 SD card, reflashed the head unit (which correct pronounciation errors) & updated the map series for free. Since then I've updated the mapset through this thread.

                              • If you are looking for Map updates for any VW discover unit, download VW’s DiscoverCare Software. It allows you to select your head unit and the region you live in. It will then automatically create an SD card for you. Download the software here.
