  • I've got a rattle in my rear view mirror. Car went in for a little checkup at 5,000kms (seat issue) so i got them to look for it, but they "couldnt reproduce it". When im in for the first service i'll reproduce it myself. Either that or fill it with expanding foam

    • You guys are lucky. My Merc A250 rattles, creaks and buzzes everywhere throughout the cabin! Have had 3 interior panels and the seat belt B pillar mount replaced so far and the sunroof pulled out and regreased and adjusted. And still rattling, waiting for another plastic panel around the aircon controls. Very common problem and Merc are aware of all of them. They have been very good though and fix everything straight away without ANY questions. I'm jumping back to a GTI in the next few weeks thank god. The Merc's bone jarring suspension is the main problem. Had it only 8 months after my Mk 6 GTI. Big mistake. Can't wait to have a GTI back!

Rattle 1 for me comes from the engine under acceleration. It's in a similar band of revs to where the waste gate rattle can be found in mk6 GTIs and 1.4tsi mk7s but it's not the waste gate. It's more faint than that. The dealer said it was normal when running in (I'm only at 1,300kms). Brendan A had it too and it went away

Rattle 2 for me comes from the soundaktor. It has only started recently and happens in a similar rev band to rattle 1 and now masks rattle 1.

Rattle 3 is very faint and sounds like it's coming from the drivers side A pillar or behind the instrument cluster. It's obvious on rough surfaces when coasting (as opposed to rattles 1 and 2 which are under acceleration).

Rattle 2 is the only one where I am certain of the cause so the car is going in for that and hopefully 1 and/or 3 can be replicated too. It's worth noting that I can't hear 1 or 3 if the radio is on so they're pretty faint.
Yes, mine did have rattle 1. The only rattles we get occasional on long trips is the drivers Sunvisor and trim around front interior lights.

Couldn't be bothered getting them fixed unless they get worse. Every time you take it back to dealer it will never reproduce the rattle. I'd have to take a tech for a drive to Brisbane for them to hear it. Rattles are a hard one to get fixed.

          • kennyc, your one sounds just like my 'rattle 1'. it's a different sound to the wastegate rattle but happens under the same circumstances and comes from the engine bay.

I reckon paulie83 and nikmorris have 'rattle 2' - the soundaktor one

Yeah I know what the wastegate rattle sounds like and it ain't that. You really need to "watch and listen" for the rattle sound.
It has been on and off the last few days and the weather has been freezing in Melbourne the last few days so maybe that is a factor?
Anyway I'm going to take it to the dealer today to get the wiper blades changed as I have the dreaded wiper smear (haven't booked a time though) also getting the car washed so will see if I can hear the rattle again.
Hopefully like your dealer said, it is just a part of the drive in and will go away for good.

Thanks to the people whom replied. My wife rang our local dealer today and to their credit they asked her to bring it in today so she could show them the noise whilst she was driving. The noise occurred and the mechanic/tech heard it quite easily and said it was not normal (the only time you want your car to make a rattle is when you are trying to show someone!). They mentioned it was likely the soundaktor, not the wastegate. Booked in for Friday and they will have a look.

                • Hey that's great to hear paulie83! Keen to hear if they are able to get to the bottom of it. I won't have time to take mine in as I am going to be away for 10 days but will definately take it in once I'm back. Atleast I feel relieved a little it's not just my car that is sick

                        Good stuff!

Looking forward to seeing more around. I have only seen one more in the wild parked at work the other week.

                        • I saw a DBP GTI PP on Pitt st in the city today. It made me want to retrofit the led rear lights - they look awesome!

                          • Going to have to get the missus to drive it while I drive behind to see the rear leds. It won't happen for a while though because I'm not giving up the keys anytime soon!!

Just get her to step on the break when it's in your garage, I asked my girlfriend to do it and she wasn't too happy I made her repeat it 5 times.
