  • Anyone else been caught out with pulling the gearshift back into sports then pushing it forward thinking your putting it back into drive but your actually putting it into neutral?

First time I've tried sports mode in the mk7 tonight. Different to my mk5 Jetta and the mk6 GTIs I've driven.

I've preferred the Sports mode toggle in the Mk7 to the S-position on the gear lever on the older Golf DSGs. Just takes a bit of getting used to but I think the new way is more intuitive.

Yeah i've done that in the past. Used to pulling it down to cycle between the 2 now.

No need for a 6cd changer, throw a 64/128gb SD card into the spare SD slot and rip everything

I did it once, about a week into ownership of the car. I use sports mode quite frequently and like it but interestingly found myself not using tiptronic at all. Where I live roads are mainly straight and no hills in sight so 'D' or 'S' is right up to the task.
In my opinion Volkswagen chose wrong orientation for their tiptronic function, it should be the other way around. If there were paddles on the steering wheel I would be using them daily.

Edit: Need to learn how to use quote thingy.

Assume you're running a 90 or 103. Must admit I've never driven one yet so haven't seen whether S mode on these engines is more usable.

In the GTI, S mode is reserved for a country blast, it's pretty unusable around town unless you're a total hoon. Unfortunately as per Mk6 D is a little lethargic at times, although they've definitely improved it since Mk6 particularly in low speed manoeuvres where it will actually consider first gear sometimes.

Sadly I don't get to use S enough at the minute so haven't noticed an issue.

            Agreed.

(Just need to add the ] after end quote above)

I'm having trouble waiting till Monday! Can't wait!!!

I have found a wheel that I like. Shame they are $$$$ option. The Pretoria wheel in a darker colour would look amazing.
So it looks like a set of OZ might be the go here as I haven't priced them here through the dealer.

It is a 103 . S mode makes it more responsive and accelerator pedal feels less doughy.

                Thanks for the tip.

                  Did someone mention OZ!?

                  No worries.

I'm guessing the seven speed DSG with the extra ratio would work that little bit better in S when compared to the six speed in the GTI.. it's all a little to manic. Nothing a DSG tune can't rectify for D model but that's further down the track. A lot further.

                  • After some advice from other GTI owners. Our Mk7 Manual is about a month old and has 1500km on it, it has been driven very lovingly. Very recently it has developed a subtle yet noticeable rattle/vibration that only comes on at exactly 2300-2400 RPM (outside of this range there is no rattle). It can only be heard in the car (not outside or in the engine bay etc) and it is louder on the driver side. At first I thought it must be a rattle from the dash, but given its so engine rev dependent and occurs whether the car is stationary or moving I am leaning towards it being mechanical and the noise of the engine overpowers it on the outside. Some research brought up an issue on the MK6: the waste gate rattle, which seems very similar to my issue.

The next point of call will be to take it into the dealer, but the pessimist in me can see them not being able to hear it or telling me its normal. So I thought I would find out whether anyone else has had this issue on their cars.

I have been looking and they have some really nice options. Just not a lot of them hanging off golf 7's that I can see as yet so it makes it difficult to conceptualise.

But all in all, this is a nice problem to have.

There has been a few different engine rattle issues also reported on the Mk7 so may be worth following up.. but yes, some dealers can be an issue. Even when there was official notification on the Mk6 it was harder for some to get the wastegate clip done.

The main suspects are in the wheel thread unless you're after something a little more obscure.. nothing a little photo-editing can't fix.

So I have been having this exact problem too 80% of the drives in the last few weeks! My GTI has done approx 10700kms now. This rattle is evident in the dash area and same here, more so on the drivers side. It happens in a similar RPM range. I have noted that's its worse in sport/individual mode but still can be heard in all modes. I am completely clueless as to what can be causing this issue but have not raised this issue with my dealer just yet. It happened 3 months ago for a day or 2 but disappeared. This time it's hanging around for much longer

Any help/advise would be great. Thanks in advance

                          • Soundaktor works on rattling the windscreen and firewall (ok, low frequency wave, but can really rattle anything with poor clearance or insulation).

                            • I have done some investigation.

Rattle 1 for me comes from the engine under acceleration. It's in a similar band of revs to where the waste gate rattle can be found in mk6 GTIs and 1.4tsi mk7s but it's not the waste gate. It's more faint than that. The dealer said it was normal when running in (I'm only at 1,300kms). Brendan A had it too and it went away

Rattle 2 for me comes from the soundaktor. It has only started recently and happens in a similar rev band to rattle 1 and now masks rattle 1.

Rattle 3 is very faint and sounds like it's coming from the drivers side A pillar or behind the instrument cluster. It's obvious on rough surfaces when coasting (as opposed to rattles 1 and 2 which are under acceleration).

Rattle 2 is the only one where I am certain of the cause so the car is going in for that and hopefully 1 and/or 3 can be replicated too. It's worth noting that I can't hear 1 or 3 if the radio is on so they're pretty faint.
