Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. For me the biggest two are size and fuel economy.

The Mazda is long and thirsty.

I can't comment on anything else as I haven't driven a Mazda 3 since 2006 when I decided to get a mk5 gti over the Sp23 at the time.

    • I haven't driven the Mazda since 2010, didn't like the interior, the thirsty 2.3/2.5L engine, and the smirky-looking front bumper. I did like how instant the throttle response was though.

      • Nah, not the current Mazda 3 jobbie, the one that is out next month (a case of honey I shrunk the Kodo 6 sedan) it has got a tonne of kit, skips two generations, is lighter and the 2.5 is direct injection high comp skyactive (fuel econ covered, but below 10 and I am happy)... that is the car she wants... I would prefer something that goes harder though (if there were only an MPS version...)

Problem is a loaded 3 equals povo GTI in dollar terms, I am buying it but she will commute in it, I get it on weekends. I miss my old 3.6l passat and am feeling the tug of the vee wee...

        • I was umming and arring over the colour but after seeing a red, white and carbon steel and black I decided to go with carbon steel. It is the colour I currently have and I think it is a great colour and side by side to the white I think it looks just as good.
The Red gril and the red side gti badges really stand out

My current one is Carbon Steel and i kind of want something different, don't want Red, not a big fan of white so pretty much stuck on Black and Silver. Just can't decide what colour. How did you make up your choice?

              Cheers
I went with carbon steel as I wanted a gti only colour and I don't like red
Ordered mkVII GTI - carbon steel - DSG - bi xenon - leather - sunroof

I am just thinking now maybe I should have got another colour. Having carbon steel on my mk6 golf and getting carbon steel on the mk7 it won't feel like a new car and it looks the same.

                • Lol I feel the same way about getting white again. But it will look subtly different. It will feel new don't worry!

Haha, we know it is different but other people may not, cos you really can't tell that much of a difference between a mk6 and mk7 unless you really know your cars.
But I guess we know what the colour is like and love it so getting the same one is the "safe" option.

In that case if it's only the colour that is making it feel like a new car experience then I'd be sticking with the mk6.

                          • A3 1.8 Quattro or Mk 7 GTi

A friend is considering getting the A3 1.8 quattro. Since I have a Mk6 GTi, he asked for my comments on whether he should get the Mk7 GTi instead. They are very similarly priced.

I haven’t driven the Mk7 GTi or the A3, so my recommendation to him was only based on my experience with the Mk6 GTi.

I told him if he likes to fully utilise the engine in low gears (in terms of acceleration), then he should probably get the A3 1.8 quattro.

I really like my Mk6 GTi, and wouldn't consider replacing it any time soon, but there has been one major frustration – I can’t fully utilise the engine in low gears, especially in the wet. The axle tramp is so bad it feels like the engine is going to thump itself loose from the subframe.

Yes, I know I can feather the throttle to the point of maximum traction and not exceed that point, but it takes a bit of time to find that limit and there is no way I can get close to the 6.9s claimed figure for the 0-100km/h.

The A3 1.8 quattro claims 6.8s for 0-100km/h, and my guess is that it can achieve that day in day out, with minimal fuss. As opposed to sitting on a jack hammer and being half a second slower.

Would appreciate your comments please, especially from people who own or have driven the Mk6 GTi / Mk7 GTi / A3 1.8 quattro.

By the way, I owned a manual Mk5 TDi a few years ago. The front tyres broke traction even more easily than the Mk6 GTi - 320Nm (Mk5 TDi) vs 280Nm (Mk6 GTi), but there was no axle tramp whatsoever. The tyres just spun smoothly, no thumping at all. Not sure what is the reason for the difference?

fair enough, the csc2's i bought for my last GTI were a bit on the noisier side, but nothing like the Bridgestone RE050s on my wifes 77tsi (with 17s, see sig)

IMO the Bridgestones i have now (s001's? not sure, car is 1500kms from me at the moment) have 0 grip unless they're very warm
