Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Passenger mirror dipping in reverse - standard 2014 Golf 90 Comfortline 6sp manual

Before I start I will say I have already done a search in the Mk 7 section but a similar query only seemed to attract responses from owners with Passats or fully optioned R32s, not the current Golf 90 Comfortline.
My confusion has not been helped by the Features and Specifications section of the current Golf Sales Brochure which indicates "automatic kerb function when reversing, passenger side exterior mirror" is available on all Mk 7 Golfs except the base 90 TSI. I then went to a VW dealer in Sydney to check out Mk 7 Golf in the flesh, so to speak, and was told by one of the salesmen that there is no such thing in the lower spec models of the VW range.
So my questions are specifically addressed to anyone here who owns a 2014 Golf Comfortline 90 TSI manual, with standard spec:
    - when reverse gear is engaged, does the passenger mirror automatically dip down to show the offside rear wheel and gutter?
    - does this feature need programming from the car's own settings menu or does it first need to be coded and/or enabled by the dealer?
    Many thanks in advance

    • From memory you have to have the mirror selector knob set to the passenger side for it to work.
Other than that it seems like a mixedbag of people who got it and people who didn't.

      • Mirror selector knob must be set to left hand side. You also need to manually adjust the mirror to where you'd like it the first time; from then on, the mirror will revert to that position when you select reverse.

Pretty sure this procedure is outlined in the manual, too.

        • I think the poster also wants to know if you have the exact car specified (90TSI in manual) to be sure what you're saying is relevant to whether the salesman is stupid or not

          • above setting info is correct...on the mk7 you also have to "tick" the mirror dip function on your radio in the settings then mirrors / windows section....VDUB...

            • I have a 2014 Base Mk7 Golf 90tsi DSG, I don't have the mirror dipping function. I believe it can be enabled through vids. Just trying to find someone who can help me enable it now.

                Thanks for responding Kesh.
Not sure what vids is, presume it is the coding software VW use??
I would add that the 2014 Golf Sales Brochure I downloaded just the other day does indicate the dipping mirror is not available in the base 90TSI ie only in the Comfortline and "above"

I would add that my mid spec BMW 3 series had the auto dipping passenger mirror feature. This car was bought new in late 1999!!!
I therefore find it hard to understand why this seemingly simple but extremely useful bit of technology is so closely guarded by VW, hidden from its own salesmen, and locked away in some top-secret dealer-access-only programming menu.

It's purely money making to be honest. Also, there are some sacrifices you have to make when considering your German counterparts. I could've gotten a Mazda 3 with more features for the same price. But the refinement of the Golf outweighed the extra features in the Mazda. I'll have to live without fog lamps, parking camera's, auto dimming mirrors etc. But in the end, I don't regret my decision haha! That said, these small features can be enabled through that vcds cable! So if you can get around to it, do it!

                      • Most if not all VW/Audi/Skoda's I have driven since the late 90's require you to select the passenger side mirror prior-to or while in the reverse gear. I have also owned driven many BMW. Each have their idiosyncrasies...

Kesh: don't get me wrong, I reckon that VCDS is a fantastic tool, but it doesn't perform miracles! You are referring to the coding changes that can be made to the passenger side door module for enabling mirror dip. I'm not sure which module is in a 90TSI, but even assuming that Ross-tech's software will enable access to the appropriate Byte/Bit in the module controller, the problem will then be in the down stream equipment. Does the passenger side mirror in a 90 TSI have a memory module? I don't know the answer, but without it, how does the left hand mirror know where to point in the dipping process?

This said, I do recall reading a post on a foreign website somewhere (long ago) where the author claimed that it was possible to reverse-dip a mirror without a memory module, but only to a preset position (i.e. It was not adjustable). If you find somone in NSW who is willing to do the tweak, please let us all know the outcome ( PM if you want the tweak instructions)
Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.

                          • The Skodas usually only do mirror dip if you have electric seats - it's to do with the electric seat control module. Golfs may be different but i doubt it.

ABCD - VCDS isn't a dealer secret thing. Any chump can buy one.

That's for the heads up DV52, I definitely won't question your knowledge regarding VCDS tweaks. You seem to have a wealth of knowledge about it, quite the opposite to myself haha. I was just reading on other forums and was maybe falsely lead into believing that it may have been possible as it was just an electronically disabled feature!

Kesh: not a problem. If you want me to try the tweak on you car, PM me (and we can then both find-out the answer to the question of whether it's possible to reverse-dip the passenger side mirror on a 90TSI)
